DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW :
The Earth Section of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography encompasses research in the Cecil H. & Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) and the Geosciences Research Division (GRD).
Research in IGPP spans a broad range of topics in geophysics including seismology, geodynamics, geodesy and crustal deformation, geomorphology, planetary physics, geomagnetism and paleomagnetism, oceanography and electrical methods.
The Cecil and Ida Green IGPP is recognized internationally as an outstanding research and teaching institution in geophysics with focus on maintaining modern infrastructure for conducting research including buildings, computer networks, computing mass storage, seagoing instrumentation, communications and global observatories.
Research in GRD embraces atmospheric, marine and solid earth chemistry, cosmochemistry, paleoceanography and paleoclimate, stratigraphy, geobiology and paleoecology, hydrogeology, global and regional tectonics, and paleomagnetism.
IGPP has 45 academics in various titles (Professor, Professor-in-Residence, Research Scientist, Project Scientist, and Specialist), several Research Associates / Visiting Scholars, 10 Postdoctoral Scholars, 30 graduate students, and 80 staff.
The Institute has approximately $22 million in annual federal, state and private allocations and $27 million in expenditures.
It occupies 55,000 square feet, including instructional and research support space, administrative offices, and research labs.
IGPP has 4 recharge facilities providing services to UCSD and the geophysics community. IGPP manages the operations of the Cecil H.
and Ida M. Green Foundation for Earth Sciences and its endowment under the direction of the Board of Directors. The foundation provides funding for postdoctoral fellowships, seed money for new research, support for visiting scholars, and cost-sharing funds.
This position is in the Acoustic Oceanography Group at IGPP. The group designs, constructs, deploys and analyzes ocean acoustic tomography experiments.
The group currently has 5 members. In 2024, we deployed eight moorings with more than two hundred acoustic sensors on two cruises.
POSITION OVERVIEW :
Under general supervision, the Research and Development Electrical Engineer will :
Fabricate, update, and assist in the design of complex electronic circuits in oceanographic instrumentation and support equipment.
Test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair oceanographic instruments using specialized equipment and procedures with careful attention to catch potentially expensive design or construction defects.
Assist in the electromechanical fabrication, maintenance, and preparation of seagoing support equipment.
Assist in seagoing logistics and operations at sea.
Help to maintain the laboratory.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Basic knowledge of engineering principles and methods to perform entry-level professional engineering functions.
Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field. Knowledge of commonly accepted and effective mechanical and electrical design practices.
Skill and experience in design, construction, testing, maintenance electrical circuit, PCBs. Ability to implement electronic and mechanical design, constructions, and wiring of new instrumentation.
Experience soldering and populating electronic boards with electronic components.
Ability to read, understand, and create electronic schematics, mechanical drawings and manufacturers data.
Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail. Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Working knowledge of engineering principles and mathematical techniques appropriate to the design and testing of mechanical and electronic systems.
Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with scientific, technical, and administrative personnel.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner. Ability to work in a collaborative manner. Ability to work with a diverse group of people and to demonstrate tact and diplomacy.
Ability to work in remote locations and at sea under potentially adverse conditions for extended periods.
Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations. Ability to use standard electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, frequency counters and spectrum analyzers.
Experience with 3-D printing and design.
Experience with Solidworks.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
The job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Must be willing and able to work effectively at sea or in foreign ports (cruises may be as long as 40 days per cruise and 4 months per year with 1-2 months typical).
Must be able to work overtime for sea trip preparation and deployment.
Must be able to move up to 50 pounds.
Must have a valid California driver's license to operate University vehicles and can acquire a forklift license.
Must have a valid passport.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range : $63,800 - $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent : $30.56 - $53.45
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
