Department Summary

Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) administers the Master of Science in marine science program for California State Universities in northern and central California, and is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in both education and research.

San José State University oversees MLML, and is the primary funding source, administering all contracts and grants, and through which all faculty and researchers are affiliated.

  • An outfitted marine operations department, active research diving program and state of the art equipment allow for cutting edge research in a wide variety of disciplines including : phycology;
  • ichthyology; invertebrate zoology; birds, mammals, and turtles; physical oceanography; geological oceanography; chemical oceanography;

biological oceanography; and computational oceanography. MLML is known for a hands-on, field-oriented approach that places our students, faculty, researchers and staff at the frontiers of marine science worldwide where discoveries are being made.

MLML provides the skills and training so students become successful scientists, teachers and resource managers serving societal needs involving marine issues.

Brief Description of Duties

We invite applications for a pool of part-time lecturers, should an opening arise, to teach our undergraduate and graduate courses on a variety of marine science topics, including : oceanography, marine ecology, statistics, sampling and experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing, graduate seminar, etc.

The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the curricular needs of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories faculty.

The pool will remain in place for three calendar years; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply.

We are seeking outstanding lecturers who can teach small to large lecture courses as well as seminars and activity sections.

Excellence in teaching is expected. Positions start at the beginning of a semester and appointments may be renewed based on department need, funding, and performance.

  • Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
  • Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

Required Qualifications

in Science or related fields or equivalent is strongly recommended. MS degree with teaching experience would be considered for teaching activity sections.

Knowledge of the subject matter of the specific course.

Good oral and written communication skills, commitment to student learning and team performance are required. Ability to evaluate adult learners and evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.

Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

L-A / - $4530 - $5405 L-B / - $5405 - $6786

L-C / - $6190 - $8554

L-D / - $7794 - $9385

Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full-time AY faculty part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester (full-time AY annual salary rate x 12).
