today, the UI remains committed to incorporating art and primary sources into teaching and research, and the UI Libraries and Stanley Museum of Art are at the forefront of this effort.

In August 2022, the Stanley Museum of Art opened in its new building adjacent to the Main Library. This proximity has enhanced our longstanding collaborations, which already include co-curated exhibitions and conservation projects.

These strengths provide unique opportunities for cross-collegiate collaboration with faculty from STEM, arts, and humanities disciplines.

The University of Iowa Libraries and the Stanley Museum of Art, which hold deep, culturally diverse, and complementary collections of art and visual materials, are seeking an engaged and intensely collaborative librarian or museum professional to serve as Outreach and Instruction Librarian.

This position is situated in the University Libraries and administratively reports to the Special Collections and Archives Lead Outreach and Instruction Librarian.

Additionally, the Librarian has a functional report to the Stanley Curator of Learning and Engagement with an expectation that approximately 40% effort is directed toward support of instruction and outreach at the Stanley Museum.

The Librarian will work toward short- and long-term goals intended to increase the visibility and usability of diverse collection materials in both units.

The Outreach and Instruction Librarian will collaborate with faculty to help them align object-based learning with course objectives across the curriculum.

They will also facilitate discovery and pedagogical use of collection objects in the Museum and Libraries and assist faculty and graduate students as they produce original research on collection objects.

Specific duties and responsibilities include :

Develop strategies to integrate collections at the Libraries and Stanley Museum into teaching and research at the University.

Promote discoverability of resources, especially focusing on collections with overlapping interest across the two units.

  • Promote a library and museum environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated.
  • Build and maintain effective and productive relationships with students and faculty across campus, in collaboration with other Libraries and Stanley Museum staff.
  • Assist with relevant physical and digital exhibits, events, and programs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Libraries and Stanley Museum toward common goals such as improving collection metadata or coordinating activities.
  • Facilitate object loans between the Libraries and the Stanley Museum for events and exhibits, in collaboration with Conservation and Collections Care staff.
  • Actively participate in departmental initiatives and standard operations such as provision of reference services.
  • Keep abreast of developments in special collections and museum standards and trends, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and / or teaching; and contribute to relevant library and University-wide activities and committees.
  • Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Qualifications :

  • Master's degree from an ALA accredited Library Science Program.
  • Ability to articulate awareness of inequities and challenges in libraries, museums, and / or education.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, and collaboration are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a welcoming and respectful environment in a job-related experience, an academic setting, and / or the community.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Advanced degree in a field related to the position.
  • Coursework or training in special collections librarianship, archives, art history, studio art, and / or museum studies.
  • Demonstrated experience in the areas of public history or the arts, including programming, events, and / or exhibitions.
  • Experience working in an archive or special collections, including the physical handling of materials.
  • Experience working in a museum environment.
  • Object-based teaching experience, especially at a college level.

The hiring salary range for this Specialist Librarian position is $55,000 - $68,000.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential / education verification.

This position is eligible for on-campus and / or hybrid remote work withinIowa, with the majority of work time being on campus,and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment.

Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
