Senior Legal Counsel, Environmental
Location : Fort Mill, SC
Reports to : VP, Associate General Counsel, Legal Affairs, Paper & Packaging
Overview :
Senior Legal Counsel will provide legal services and advise the Paper & Packaging Business Unit (Unit) personnel from various departments and facilities in relation to the Unit’s activities and operations in Canada & the United States, ensuring that the Unit’s, and the Company’s, objectives and interests are protected and furthered, as well as carried out in a manner that is in conformity with all applicable policies, laws and regulations.
Senior Legal Counsel will provide expert legal counsel on environmental requirements to ensure compliance in our sites' day-to-day operations.
You will also be a key legal partner to the Company, supporting environmental due diligence efforts on transactions.
Job Responsibilities / Accountabilities :
- Lead complex permitting efforts by forming teams of functional and operational experts, developing permitting strategies, and directing their execution.
- Identify emerging new laws / regulations and proposed changes to existing regulations, assessing their impacts on the Unit and the Company.
- Lead advocacy efforts on proposed regulatory developments, including drafting official comments on behalf of the Company.
- Conduct internal investigations into allegations of non-compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
- Respond to formal and informal notices of non-compliance received from regulatory bodies.
- Participate in the global ESG audit programs.
- Provide legal services and support with procurement / sales matters, including the drafting, negotiation and revising of sales / supply agreements.
- Manage litigation matters, including managing external counsel.

Minimum Qualifications :
- Must be a graduate of an accredited law school and admitted to a provincial / state bar
- Minimum of 3-7 years of legal experience with environmental and manufacturing matters.
- Very strong oral and written skills
- Has relevant junior associate experience with a law firm
- Prior in-house experience in or related to the pulp and paper industry is a plus
- Hybrid work environment with a physical presence based out of the Fort Mill, SC office.
- Occasional travel required.
