About the Department of Learning and Engagement :
The Department of Learning and Engagement (L&E) at The Museum of Modern Art supports the Museum’s founding educational mission to ensure that people of all ages and abilities enjoy, understand and use the art of our time in ways that add value to their lives.
The department collaborates across the organization to empower a diverse public to form their own interpretations and connections to art by telling stories, asking questions, actively making and participating in the artistic process, and offering and listening to multiple perspectives.
Programs offered by the department range from artist-driven activations to classes, online courses, studio programs, facilitated gallery explorations, workshops, publications and more.
The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for the Emily Fisher Landau Fellowship to work directly with the Family Programs team in the Learning and Engagement Department.
The person in the role will gain hands-on experience coordinating the day to day administration of our family programs, interpretive resources, and hands-on spaces for kids and families.
The Fellow will be trained to teach Family Gallery Talks, and develop written resources and activities to engage families.
This is a two-year fixed term position. The Fellowship is expected to commence mid-September 2024 and conclude early August 2026.
Responsibilities include :
- Coordinators the administration, day-to-day coordination, marketing, registration and reporting of Family Gallery Talks, Family Art Workshops, Family Art Making, cultural celebrations and special events.
- Corresponds and works directly with the public, as well as with contract teaching artists, volunteers, Learning and Engagement, and Membership staff.
- Drafts surveys and analyzes and reports on data.
- Works with the Interpretation, Research, and Digital Learning team on the development of Museum-wide resources for family engagement, including kids labels, audio and printed guides.
- Helps with the day-to-day management of Art Lab, including coordinating facilitator schedules, ordering supplies, liaising with staff, troubleshooting, and keeping Learning and Engagement staff informed of any issues that need to be addressed.
- Oversees outreach emails and marketing newsletters, including researching content, drafting copy, liaising with editors, scheduling communications, and building newsletters in Emarsys.
Builds, schedules, and researches content for the family and outreach newsletters.
- Works across the Museum with Membership, Visitor Engagement, Communications, and Creative Team colleagues to support family engagement.
- Coordinates outreach to New York City Department of Education contacts, and community partner organizations.
- Assists with the opening of a new installation in Art Lab, including preparing resources, testing activities, organizing supplies, and observing how visitors engage in the space.
- Participates in training to learn best practices for museum teaching with the goal of developing a teaching practice; when ready, can periodically lead Family Gallery Talks.
- Will gain experience planning and developing programs for families, including gallery and art-making experiences.
- Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above
This position will work on a Tuesday through Saturday, or Sunday through Thursday schedule.
Requirements :
- Bachelor’s of art, science, or fine arts in art history, art or museum education, fine arts, or education.
- A basic knowledge of modern and contemporary art / artists.
- Experience working with children and / or families in an educational environment; museum education preferred.
- Exceptional skills communicating, organizing, collaborating, writing and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Personable, flexible, intuitive, detail-oriented, a sense of humor.
- Some museum teaching experience is preferred.
- Ability to speak a second language is helpful.
- Must be available to work weekends.
- Experience working with underserved and underrepresented audiences.
- Knowledge of Excel, Emarsys, Splash, Adobe InDesign.
