Job Description
Reporting to the Department Director, the Social Worker (Oncology) assumes responsibility and accountability for the patients in the cancer center and provides care to those patients with the social work process, and coordinates patient care with other healthcare team member.
Performs psychosocial assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, and assists with discharge planning and referral to other services.
Qualifications
Licensure / Certification / Registration
- Required : Current Maryland Social Worker License in good standing. Valid Driver’s License.
- Preferred : LCSW-C and OSW-C
Education / Knowledge
- Attained Level : Advanced Professional Master’s Degree
- Completed Course Work / Program : Social Work, Behavioral Sciences, or related Health Sciences.
Applicable Experience
- Experience (years) : Required : Less than 1 year Preferred : 2 or more years
- Experience : Required : Completion of work study / internship in providing social work and case management services.
- Preferred : One or more years of case management experience in a medical provider setting. Experience in an oncology setting.

- Ability to apply basic principles, core concepts and new developments within the fields of both social work and leadership.
- Ability to perform responsibilities in accordance with established standards for all age groups to include the principles of growth and development over the human lifespan.
- Ability to exercise a logical approach to case management challenges, collect and analyze information, and develop timely solutions including problem solving through team collaboration, policy development, and community linkages.
- Ability to assess and respond to patient / family needs arising from illness, disability, critical care issues, end of life, grief, trauma, abuse and neglect.
- Ability to establish and sustain effective relationships with the patient and family through the care process.
- Good knowledge of all applicable legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements, including Joint Commission standards and UMCAP policies and procedures.
- Ability to understand and apply to the provision of care psychosocial oncology research and evaluate findings.
