Overview
Medical Scribes are unlicensed individuals who function in partnership with a medical provider to assist in the documentation of medical conversations, exams and treatment with patients.
Scribes are expected to gain competency with the often highly specialized focus of their provider. Scribes provide direct support for specific medical providers, and are intended to match schedules with their assigned provider.
Schedule may vary from day-to-day and week-to-week. Scribing may be done in-person or virtually depending on the needs of the provider.
Scribes are not interchangeable without significant additional training.
This position requires someone with high-level written and verbal communication skills and the ability to remain calm, problem solve and stay organized under high pressure conditions and timelines.
Function / Duties of Position
- Multiple Schedules Available*
- Accurately and efficiently record the History of Present Illness (HPI) and Review of Systems (ROS) into the Electronic Health RecordUpdate the Past Medical History (PMH), Social History, Medications, Allergies;
Specialty-specific metrics, visit Summaries, discharge summaries, while the clinician interacts with the patient.
Accurately and efficiently record the details of the Physical Exam, Medical Decision-Making, Assessment and Plan, and pend any computerized Orders as directed by the clinician.
Includes ICD Codes, prescriptions, diagnostics, referrals and medical equipment.
- Review patient charts, including outside records for information pertinent to the visit and include such information in the note per established workflows.
- Monitor the progress of labs, imaging, or other patient evaluation data, and record the results into the appropriate notes so the clinician can access the necessary information and make sound treatment decisions.
- Document and pend orders necessary for procedures being performed by the clinician using appropriate billing codes and medical terminology as required by the billing department.
- Place Scribe Attestation statement on every chart completed with aid of a scribe.
- Update Provider Preferences and specialty-specific training material regularly and as indicated.
- Attend all scribe meetings and proactively communicate with scribe trainer and manager as appropriate since work is done entirely at locations separate from where direct support and supervision can be provided.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent within one year of start-date.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Extensive computer skills including MS Office and Windows required.
- Excellent customer service skills, and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be detail oriented and have good organizational skills.
- Must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, including both written and verbal.
- Must have strong grammar skills.
- Must have a demonstrable record of reliable attendance, punctuality, and proven successful performance at past and present employers.
- Must be able to work both with a team and independently.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Ability to stay calm under high pressure conditions and timelines.

Preferred Qualifications
EDUCATION
Coursework demonstrating focus on pursuing a career in healthcare at a graduate / doctorate level.
EXPERIENCE
Prior experience in healthcare settings, particularly in the role of clinical scribe.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of medical terminology and higher-level science courses Including anatomy and physiology.
- Understanding of medical note content, medical billing and coding.
- Typing speed of 60 words per minute.

ENVIRONMENT, PHYSICAL DEMANDS & EQUIPMENT USAGE
Medical Scribes can have a variable schedule pending assignment. Scribes must be able to travel to necessary OHSU campuses (Marquam Hill, South Waterfront, 1-5 days a week.
Scribes do not provide medical care, but must be comfortable remaining in the room while medical care and medical procedures are provided.
While working on-campus the position requires the ability to stand, ambulate, and use a computer for 8 hours a day, in 4-hour continuous increments.
Must also be able to carry a laptop and / or push a Workstation-On-Wheels (WOW).
