M.A. or equivalent in art history, American Art, or a related field

Position Summary :

Under the supervision of the deputy director of curatorial and academic affairs, the William J. Thompson Curatorial Fellow in American Art will create a catalogue raisonné for the artist William J.

Thompson, preparation for an exhibition of the work of William J. Thompson, and perform curatorial duties related to ongoing activities in the department of American Art.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and / or Competencies :

  • Strong background in any field of American Art, especially 20th century sculpture and painting.
  • Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Excellent writing, research, communication, clerical, and organizational skills.
  • Strong oral communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and teamwork skills to successfully work with diverse groups in an academic environment.
  • Skilled in establishing priorities, coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, and meeting deadlines.
  • Computer skills including MS Office and Adobe, and experience with museum databases (TMS).
  • Experience in a museum setting and with exhibition planning and installation.

Physical Demands :

Work in a typical office environment, which will include mobility in the museum and occasionally lifting boxes and other items weighing approximately 20-30 pounds each.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Prepare catalogue raisonné :

  • Research all available records and resources related to the oeuvre of William J. Thompson. This will involve using internet, print, voice, and in-person research modalities, and may involve travel to private and public collections outside of the immediate area.
  • Oversee digitization of works of art as needed.
  • Confirm titles and title variations, dimensions / sizes, dates, and media.
  • Confirm current location and owner of works, provenance, and exhibition history.
  • Working with the director of IT and selected vendors, prepare the catalogue to be launched using blockchain technology.

Exhibition Planning and Production :

  • Takes lead role in researching a possible exhibition on the work of William J. Thompson, from inception to installation, including conceptual outline, selection of objects from the permanent collection and loans, research, writing, implementation, budget development and oversight, and interpretation.
  • Participate in the exhibition-related publication (producing exhibition catalogue / brochure essays, obtaining images, permissions, and copyright clearance to maintain accurate credit lines), collaborating with colleagues in the communications and education departments.

  • Under the direction of the deputy director of curatorial affairs, assist with the research and care of the permanent collection of American art and American art under acquisition consideration.
  • Oversees gallery rotations of American art.
  • With the education department, plan and coordinate public programs related to exhibitions and installations of American art as requested.
