Associate Dean for Graduate Programs - Kirkhof College of Nursing

The Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Research for the Kirkhof College of Nursing provides leadership in managing all areas of the graduate academic degree programs including faculty and student affairs, program coordination, program evaluation, resource development and management, leadership in the development of future goals and directions for graduate nursing education, and public relations that facilitate the educational missions of the College of Nursing.

Also provides leadership in the college in the area of scholarly endeavors and strategic planning of related goals and directions.

Will facilitate teaching effectiveness and faculty scholarly projects that support the research, scholarship, academic and practice missions of the school.

This is an FTE 12-month appointment, and includes administration (75%), scholarship and teaching (25%).

Graduate Student Recruitment Responsibilities

Coordinates marketing and recruitment activities for the graduate programs (including all graduate certificates and badges) in collaboration with KCON’s Director of Communication and External Relations.

Works closely with Institutional Marketing and the Graduate School to facilitate effective marketing and recruitment strategiesDevelops marketing and recruitment materials in collaboration with KCON’s Director of Communication and External Relations and submits those materials to Institutional Marketing for formatting and layoutOversees / coordinates the review of completed applications for admission (using the OnBase system)Facilitates the faculty application review and interview processPresents candidates to KCON Graduate Academic Affairs committee for an admission decisionNotifies students of admission decisionsMeets with candidates who are not selected to discuss alternative educational options.

Graduate Student Retention and Graduation Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance and support for new graduate students
  • Provides schedules of deadlines, counsels, and provides direction to students as they proceed into and through their program;

supported by the KCON Senior Academic Advisor

  • Monitors student academic progress and performance in the program, and timely progress towards degree, including approval of Program Plans of Study and coordination of the culminating experiene Identifies student support needed for retention and graduationAdjudicates graduate student issues / problems following Unit Head reviewCommunicates to graduate students and program faculty the current University, Graduate School, and Program policies, procedures, requirements, standards and new developments or information pertaining to all aspects of graduate programs in their area
  • Formulates and administers program academic review policies and procedures for warnings, probation, and suspension
  • Actively promotes graduate student participation in academic and co-curricular activities
  • Reviews and approves graduate student scholarly project proposals
  • Reviews and approves graduate student scholarly project defense
  • Completes necessary documentation to authorizes / affirm KCON graduates eligibility to take the nursing certification exam in their area of specialty

Curriculum Responsibilities

  • Ensures that graduate program operations function in compliance with university policies and provides assistance in the implementation of these policies and procedures
  • Works with KCON faculty, the KCON Curriculum Committee, and the University Curriculum Committee to facilitate curriculum / program changes and to coordinate periodic review of graduate curriculum
  • Guides faculty members in university and college accreditation efforts
  • Works with faculty members and administrators in maintaining the quality and viability of the graduate program
  • Provides guidance and support for Academic Community Liaison related to procurement of clinical site placements; works with faculty and community partners to address gaps
  • Meets with practice partners to discuss preceptor and clinical placement needs (e.g. Spectrum Health, Munson Health, Mercy Health, Metro Health, McLaren Health, Mary Free Bed)

Programmatic Responsibilities

  • Serves as the program representative for graduate education
  • Works with the KCON Dean and Leadership Team, all members of the KCON community, and other colleges / departments within the university to ensure university diversity, equity and inclusivity goals are being actualized.

g. five-year vision).Collaborate with practice partners on funding opportunities that promote the mission and vision of KCON and GVSU

  • Coordinates program assessment activities related to the graduate program review, student achievement in terms of learning outcomes, placement of students, graduation rate, accreditation applications and compliance, and other program-related changes
  • Coordinates program review in compliance with the guidelines established by the Graduate Council Ensures ongoing data tracking efforts are maintained related to graduate programs attainment of program / college objectives and accreditation requirementsAnalyzes data against benchmarks and implements quality improvement processes as indicated
  • Oversee the graduate programs budget
  • Develop and manage the graduate program’s fiscal plan for the academic year
  • Evaluate requests for needed resources
  • Evaluate reimbursement requests related to graduate program activities
  • Evaluates financial support requests for students to disseminate their work
  • Evaluates financial support requests for faculty development
  • Oversees procurement of external resources to support the educational mission
  • Calculate and report overload for fall, winter, and spring / summer semesters
  • Report faculty reassigned time
  • Serves as the point of contact between the academic unit, graduate program, the Graduate School, and the university.
  • Notifies the Graduate School of discipline specific conferences or annual meetings held in the Midwest / Great Lakes region
  • Ensures all university and required program surveys and reports are completed / submitted (e.g. Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education;
  • American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) annual report; AACN Continuous Improvement Progress Report; Nurse Practitioner pass rates;

Clinical Nurse Leader pass rates; GVAdvance)

  • Oversee graduate student award recognition selection process
  • In collaboration with administrative team, plan and implement graduate student recognition ceremony
  • Assures all faculty and students in the graduate programs continue to meet health compliance requirements
  • Faculty oversight Recruit and interview prospective tenure / tenure track faculty in collaboration with the KCON Faculty Affairs Committee and administrative teamOnboard new tenure / tenure track graduate facultyReview LIFT evaluations for all graduate programs each semester and provide feedback to faculty
  • Provides faculty conflict resolution when appropriate Conduct affiliate faculty evaluationsConduct adjunct faculty evaluationsProvides input in the evaluation of tenure / tenure-line faculty
  • Foster an environment that enhances faculty development, opportunities and abilities in educational endeavors
  • Provide guidance in the development of the faculty workload schedules for the academic year based on the needs of the college

Office of Nursing Research Center Responsibilities

  • Administers the Nursing Research Center
  • Develops / maintains the infrastructure needed to fulfill the scholarship mission of the College of Nursing, to include acquisition of resources, support for grant submission and management, and mentoring activities
  • Provides faculty support with grant proposal development (pre-award) and grant implementation and evaluation (post-award) processes
  • Mentors and supports faculty in the development of research / scholarly programs appropriate to rank and interest
  • Participates in development and administration of the Nursing Research Center budget
  • Advocates for, hires and supervises graduate assistants
  • Facilitates the growth and productivity of the Nursing Research Center, ensuring the integration of scholarship for teaching, research, service, and practice
  • Promotes internal and external interdisciplinary research initiatives
  • Acts as advocate for Kirkhof College of Nursing faculty and liaison with University resources for excellence in teaching and for faculty research and publication
  • Communicates and promotes opportunities for professional development, funding opportunities, and dissemination of scholarship products
  • Ensures ongoing data tracking efforts related to faculty and student research, scholarship, and grant effort is maintained and evaluated
  • Manage continuing education (CE) provider requirements

Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in nursing or related discipline; if doctorate not in nursing must have earned master’s degree in nursing;
  • previous teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Record of professional, community, and university service;

record of scholarly productivity; experience in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, strong leadership and organizational abilities, and effective interpersonal skills.

Previous academic administrative experience desirable; eligible for RN licensure in Michigan.

Formal Accountability

Reports to the Dean and is a member of the Dean’s Administrative Team.

Working Conditions :

Normal office environment. Some travel and occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Physical Demands : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

SALARY : Minimum starting salary of $120,000;commensurate with experience
