Job Summary

The following information aims to provide potential candidates with a better understanding of the requirements for this role.

The Chief Administrative Officer reports to the Chair of the Department and is responsible for administration of the Department including acting on behalf of the Chair on all issues, except those related to clinical care which must be directed by a physician.

The Chief Administrative Officer has management responsibilities, either directly or indirectly, in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB) and Department of Family and Community Medicine (FCM).

This position is responsible for the finance and research administration units in both the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Family and Community Medicine : annual operating budgets of $30M in addition to $8M in contract revenue, State funds of $3M;

Net Clinical Revenue of $25M, UCDH & SOM Agreements $3M, Extramural Research of $8M, Gifts $3.5M Endowments Market Value of $7M, and Reserves of $10M.

Academic Programs Include : Department of Family and Community Medicine, the Obstetrics and Gynecology divisions of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Family Planning, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urogynecology, Gynecology Oncology.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Extensive experience with financial and budget accountability.
  • Extensive experience in developing business models, strategic planning and development.
  • Multiple years of management and supervisory experience, preferably a team of administrative staff.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the capability of managing capital projects. Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.

Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner. Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.

Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) or related field of study.
  • Medical Center experience preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management and / or personnel management under labor contract(s) and personnel policy.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards.
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals which measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department.

Department Overview

The OB School of Medicine academic / clinical department has approximately 40 faculty members, 11 Volunteer Clinical Faculty, 4 Staff Physicians, 9 Fellows, 30 Residents, and approximately 76 staff members.

The FCM School of Medicine academic / clinical department of approximately 19 faculty members, 30 Volunteer Clinical Faculty, 8 Staff Physicians, 47 Residents, and approximately 40 staff members.

The departments are responsible for providing research, education, community and clinical services.
