LOCATIONS

Based out of Jewell, Tillamook, Corvallis, Roseburg, and Coos Bay, Oregon.

WHAT YOU WILL DO :

As a Biological Science Assistant Spawning Ground Surveyor, you will independently survey selected Oregon coastal streams to count naturally spawning salmon.

Data are distributed to Ocean Salmon Management, Regional and Fish Division staff for use in managing coastal salmon stocks.

General project activities include :

Conduct spawning ground surveys by locating, driving to and walking or boating selected stream reaches to count spawning salmonids and redds.

Collect biological information from dead salmonids including; length, gender, species, fin clip / tag status, scale samples, and fish snouts.

Data management : Enter field data into data collection devices, upload data to servers daily, and ensure data accuracy.

Training : Participate in required training sessions including field survey orientation, data entry, defensive driving, CPR / First Aid, and other agency requirements.

The nature of this work means employees will be working alone for extended periods of time under adverse weather conditions in remote and semi-remote areas without cell phone and / or internet connectivity.

These positions are physically demanding, requiring walking up to 10 miles per day, this will occur outdoors, over rough terrain and in cold swift streams often in inclement weather.

Some of the selected surveys will require the use of inflatable non-motorized boats to access sites and to conduct fish counts .

Employees are partnered with another individual and are expected to maintain a professional working relationship with their partner(s).

Employees are also expected to effectively communicate with ODFW, other government agencies, private landowners, and members of the public.

These positions require a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day including most weekends.

REQUESTED SKILLS :

Minimum qualifications are not established for these positions; however we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.

g., experience identifying adult salmonids, operating boats in rivers, conducting stream surveys, sampling fish, communicating with members of the public, and keeping neat and precise field data) and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological / ecological sciences will be given preference for interviews.

REQUIREMENTS

Criminal Records / DMV Check : Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions.

Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position.

Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist.

Adverse background and / or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.
