GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT :
Performs all functionsof phlebotomist, including the more difficult cases. Troubleshoots problems andfollow up as appropriate.
Works independently and is able to direct a team ofphlebotomists. Assists supervisor and manager with duties such as scheduling,orientation, training and competency assessment.
Assists supervisor withadministrative tasks as directed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES :
1.Providesoversight in the absence of the supervisor on weekends and holidays
a.Makes changes in the schedule as necessary.
b.Providesadequate coverage / including offsite.
c.Uses sound judgment in handling problems. Notifiessupervisor or manager as appropriate.
2.Assiststhe supervisor in the orientation and training of new employees; making certainthat all orientation and competency paperwork is complete and accurate.
Assistswith annual competency assessment and documentation. Assists with performanceevaluations as appropriate.
3.Performsall duties and responsibilities of a phlebotomist. Performs venipunctures ondifficult patients when phlebotomists are not able to obtain samples.
a.Identifies the patient according to department policiesand procedures.
b.Collectsappropriate vacutainer tubes and maintains stability as necessary.
c.Properly retrieves electronic orders from CollectionManager and Epic as necessary.
d.Followsall directions applicable to research protocols.
e.Uses proper phlebotomy technique and isolationprocedures as required.
f.Communicates necessary information concerning patientsand patient specimens to appropriate person in a timely manner.
g.Followsall Infection Control guidelines.
4.Demonstratesthe skills and competence necessary to perform EKGs.
a.Identifies the patient according to department policiesand procedures.
b.Properlyattaches the leads to the patient.
c.Accurately enters the patient’s information into themachine.
d.Performsthe EKG and transmits the results.
e.Demonstrates respect of the patient and their privacyat all times.
5.Performsroutine, STAT and timed heel stickson babies, inpatient and outpatient.
a.Understands the potential risks involved with obtainingspecimens from neonates.
b.Usesproper phlebotomy and isolation techniques for neonates.
c.Identifies the patient according to department policiesand procedures.
d.Checkscollection site prior to leaving the patient.
6.Servesas a resource for the phlebotomy and Lab Control staff.
7.Responsiblefor ensuring efficient phlebotomy services in the designated area ofresponsibility.
a.Ensures all phlebotomists have documented competencyfor all tasks and duties as appropriate.
b.Arrangesbreaks to minimize patient wait time. Immediately notifies supervisor or managerof any delays.
c.Monitors and facilitates efficient workflow. Immediatelynotifies supervisor or manager of issues.
d.Assistswith incident reports as directed by the supervisor.
e.Serves as the liaison between phlebotomy and otherareas to resolve issues.
f.Ensures that staff members demonstrate good customerservice skills; reports all issues to the supervisor.
g.Ensuresthat phlebotomists take their schedule breaks. Monitors they take their breakson time and returning from breaks on time.
8.Responsiblefor maintaining the condition, supplies and documentation in designated area ofresponsibility.
a.Maintains a safe environment at all times. Immediatelynotifies supervisor or manager of patient safety issues.
b.Maintainslab requisitions in a neat and orderly manner for area of responsibility.Transfers requisitions to Lab Control for off-site storage at the end of eachmonth.
c.Maintains phlebotomy logbooks as required.
d.Ordersand maintains an appropriate level of supplies. Ensures that expired suppliesare removed from the area.
9.Followsprocedures for Standing orders including :
a.Maintaining Standing order file for non-BWH patients ina neat and orderly manner for designated area of responsibility.
b.Notifyingphysicians of standing orders due to expire (non-BWH patients).
c.Ensuring that only active Standing orders aremaintained in the file.
10.Workscollaboratively as a senior member of the phlebotomy team :
a.Follows all department policies and procedures and actsas a role model for other staff members.
b.Demonstratesprofessional customer service skills.
c.Assists in the identification and resolution of issues.
d.Demonstratesability to effectively communicate with all team members, team leaders,supervisors, managers and administrators.
Adheres to the Code of ConductPolicy.
11.Assiststhe supervisor in tracking staff productivity for all shifts.
12.Responsiblefor pagers and other hospital hardware.
a.Adheres to the pager and phone protocol and isresponsible for the communication devices.
b.Adheresto the Epic and Collection Manager protocol and is responsible for care of the scanners,batteries and printers.
13.Is responsibleto be aware of Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and to compilewith BWH hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
14.Followsall Infection Control guidelines throughout the venipuncture and heelstickprocedures. Ensures that staff is following established guidelines.
15.Requiredweekend and holiday rotation according to the needs of the department.
16.Performsall other duties as required.
Qualifications
1.HighSchool diploma or equivalent.
2.Nationalcertification (ie, ASCP or ASPT) preferred.
3.Scores effective or above on most recent performance evaluation. No activecorrective action on file.
4.Atleast three years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
5.Demonstratedability to perform routine and STATvenipuncture on adults and babies, as well as difficult patients.
SKILLS / ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES REQUIRED :
1.Requiresknowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injuryto self and patients.
2.Abilityto perform more difficult venipunctures.
3.Requiresbasic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of veins and neonates’ heels.
4.Requiredability to interpret electronic orders or lab requisition and selectappropriate vacutainer tube(s) for collection.
5.Standingand walking for 90% of the time and some physical effort to transport suppliesand specimens.
6.Musthave basic computer knowledge of Windows, Outlook, Epic, Collection Manager andSunquest.
7.Abilityto work collaboratively as a senior member of the laboratory team and to assumeoversight in the absence of supervisor.
8.Mustdemonstrate sound judgment.
9.Musthave the ability to interact with physicians, nurses, and coordinators onnursing units.
10.Musthave the ability to interact with patients and their families.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
1.Extremelybusy work environment.
2.Potentialexposure to needle sticks and punctures from other sharps.
3.Exposureto patients with infectious diseases.Must take appropriate precautions according to Infection Control andlaboratory guidelines.
4.Requiredweekend and holiday rotation according to the needs of the department.
5.Rotationin all labs required when needed.
