Purpose
You are responsible for the ordering and receiving of the produce department. Most of this work includes placing weekly orders from Alberts, RDW, and local vendors (in season), and receiving the subsequent deliveries.
You will be expected to remain knowledgeable about our inventory levels and adequately manage the supply / demand needed to keep the department looking its best for our customers while minimizing department shrink.
Additionally, during the absence of the Produce Manager, you may be responsible for additional assigned duties.

Essential Responsibilities
- Receive produce shipments in a timely manner by properly prioritizing tasks to ensure maximum shelf life of all products :
- Get highly perishable items & / or out of stock items to the floor or back stock first.
- Secondly, process greens into water.
- Thirdly, handle items stable at room temperature last.
- Accurately notate invoices with the necessary quantity counts, credits needed, Special Orders, etc.
- Accurately receive invoices into the Point-of-Sale.
- Maintain good vendor relations with all produce vendors by acting in a professional manner during all interactions.
- Place required produce orders by the set deadlines.
- Work with the Produce Manager to plan seasonal displays and promotions.
- Compile the produce waste log weekly and correct inventory in the Point-of-Sale.
- Help complete quarterly inventory by the assigned dates.
- Visit local vendors, when possible, to learn about their practices.
- Read (sign off) and adhere to the Produce Department Procedures Binder once per year.
Floor Operations
- Check Produce whiteboard daily for updates in the department.
- Effectively communicate with incoming coworkers at the end of each shift by leaving a note on the Produce whiteboard concerning weird back stock situations or what tasks still need to be completed.
- Effectively communicate with the Produce Manager via note in inbox.
- Stock and cull the department every ½ hour to maintain visual appeal for customers.
- Fill any gaps in displays by appropriately rearranging displays.
- Maintain front-end cleanliness by spot cleaning as needed : sweeping the floor, wiping water stains off the cooler, cleaning up cilantro / broccoli pieces, vacuum up debris in displays, vacuum rugs if appropriate.
- Mist open greens cooler as needed to maintain leafy greens' shelf life.
- Ensure all products have a price tag, and that tags are aligned to the correct items.
- Ensure all items placed in back stock are properly labeled with name & date.
- Accurately waste out all culled produce and place either in the free staff bin or sealed compost.
- Wash all produce dishes before the end of your shift.
- Fill out the appropriate checklist by the end of your shift and place in the drop box.
- Maintain a clean back room by cleaning the counter / sinks and sweeping the floor as needed.
- Arrive on time and ready to work!
- Comply with Breadroot policy concerning dress code. Specifically :
- Wear your apron and name tag.
- Long hair is pulled back when working with produce.
- Closed-toe shoes are required when working a produce truck.
- Read and sign-off on the Communication Log once per week.
- Only use computers to complete job-related activities, not personal accounts, or logins.
- Receive invoices, change buttons, print labels, or change prices.
- Obtain pricelists for ordering from the produce email account
- To educate on produce related topics (only when a 2nd produce staff is available to watch the floor)
