Semiskilled work below the journeyman level in servicing and repairing a variety of heavy automotive equipment.

Work involves responsibility for performing semiskilled tasks in the servicing, maintenance and repair of heavy automotive equipment.

An employee in this class usually assists a Heavy Equipment Mechanic on complex repair jobs. However, the employee is expected to perform routine daily tasks independently.

Supervision is received from a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Supervisor, and work is checked through inspection and through the performance of the equipment serviced.

Essential Functions

Services and changes oil in a variety of heavy equipment, including trucks, pay-loaders, bulldozers and cranes.

Performs minor repairs and replacement work, adjusting points, cleaning and replacing spark plugs.

Assists Heavy Equipment Mechanics in lowering or lifting heavy parts in removing or installing automotive equipment.

Removes defective parts, such as starters, generators, water pumps, and radiators.

Cleans and changes filters on construction and maintenance equipment. Checks compressors, radiators and radiator hoses. Performs general service on all types of heavy-duty equipment.

Dismantles equipment for repairs. Gives semiskilled mechanical assistance in all areas of automotive repair.

Changes tires and repairs flats on a variety of heavy automotive equipment.

May operate fuel delivery trucks and delivers gasoline, diesel fuel and / or miscellaneous lubricants to various city facilities.

Operates service truck to make minor repairs to heavy equipment and to change or add tires, batteries and gasoline.

Assists in removing engines and other assemblies, and dismantles for overhaul or replacement.

Assists in automotive body-work and preparing equipment for painting.

Greases and lubricates bulldozers, cranes trucks, street sweepers, and other heavy equipment.

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months experience in semiskilled work in automotive repair and maintenance at a garage.

Possession of a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License (Class B) or higher is required.

Equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months of the required experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

An X endorsement on the Commercial Driver's License may be required at the time of application; or must be obtained prior to the completion of the probationary period.

SPECIAL NOTE

As a condition of employment, the DMV records of those selected for hire must be submitted during the pre-employment process at the candidate's expense.

Proof of education in the form of a high school diploma or its equivalent. Foreign diplomas / degrees must be submitted with a credential evaluation report from an approved credential evaluation agency*.

Translations of diploma / degrees are not accepted. If degree / diploma does not reflect the academic major on its face, transcripts indicating degree completion must be submitted.

If submitting transcripts, submitted transcripts must include the following : student's name, school name, number of credits, degree completion, and major.

Audit / Academic reports are not accepted as substitutions for college transcripts.

Copy of a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License (Class B or higher) must be submitted to the Department of Human Resources at time of application and maintained valid throughout employment in this classification.

Foreign diplomas / degrees must be submitted with a credential evaluation report from an approved credential evaluation agency*.

To qualify under the equivalency clause, applicant must provide proof of education in one or more of the following applicable forms : an Associates degree, or at least 60 college credits, or a Bachelors degree or higher.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all required documents submitted with the employment application are in a format that is acceptable, clear and legible for eligibility determination or risk being disqualified.

Applicants, including City of Miami employees, must completely detail their work experience on the employment application or risk being disqualified.

Selection Preference for City Residents : In accordance with APM 2-02, applicants for classified positions who are City of Miami residents and new hires will receive preference in selection from interview ranking bands provided that any two (2) of the following documents are submitted with the employment application and again at time of interview :

A. Utility bill dated within 60 days of the date of submission

B. Valid Florida Driver License or State-issued I.D.

C. Property Tax Statement dated within 1 year of the date of submission

D. Properly executed valid lease agreement

E. Homestead Exemption dated within 1 year of the date of submission

F. Motor Vehicle Registration dated within 90 days of the date of submission

G. Official school records or transcripts, dated within 90 days of the date of submission

H. W-2 (or 1099) Tax Form dated within 1 year of the date of submission

City of Miami residents are granted selection preference over non-City of Miami residents within the same ranking band resulting from an interview process.

Selection Preference : Selection preference within the same ranking band resulting from an interview process will be granted in the following order : 1) preference eligible veterans, 2) active City of Miami employees, 3) City of Miami residents, 4) all others.
