The Forensic NurseExaminer (FNE) demonstrates performance consistent withprofessional forensic nursing standards of practice, care, andperformance, the Nurse Practice Act and the mission and goals ofthe organization.

Provides forensic nursing services for allvictims of violence / abuse / neglect. Is responsible for collectingand preserving forensic evidence while maintaining the chain ofcustody.

Performs forensic examinations for the purpose of forensicinjury identification and documentation. Works collaboratively tomeet the acute needs of primary and secondary forensic patients bymaking appropriate patient referrals through identification andcoordination of services throughout thecommunity.

Essential Duties andResponsibilities

• Be on-calland work irregular hours due to the nature ofprogram.
• Work in an emotionally charged fieldwith a variety of professional and paraprofessional personnel withpatience and sensitivity.
• Prioritize tasks andwork effectively with complex tasks under pressure / timerestraints / irregular schedules
• Maintainconfidential patient information
• Maintain chainof custody for records, photographs, and forensicspecimens
• Understand and comply with mandatoryreporting requirements for incidents of abuse andneglect
• Testify in court whenneeded.
• Provide care appropriate to meet theage and cultural needs of the patientsserved.
• Demonstrate ability to assessdata / interpret appropriate information needed to identify eachpatient's requirements relative to age specific needs as well asclinical indications
• Provide direct nursing andforensic care forensic patients.
• Performassessment, reassessment, and monitoring ofpatients
• Recognize the medical, legal, andsocial responsibilities in caring for forensicpatients
• Complete various state forms asrequired by law.
• Facilitate the patient'schoice to prosecute by providing support and referrals to thecriminal justice system.
• Identify resources andmake referrals for health care and long-term therapy needs for theforensic patients as needed.
• Serve as aresource for health care providers in the coordination andmanagement for the care of primary and secondary forensicpatients.
• Assist with the coordination oftraining opportunities for new forensic nurse examiners and othermedical professionals.

Qualifications

• Graduatefrom an accredited School of Nursing Completion of a Sexual AssaultNurse Examiner course in accordance with the InternationalAssociation of Forensic Nurses Education Guidelines -required
• 1-3 years of recent acute careclinical experience as a registered nurse -required
• Fundamental nursing theories andcurrent clinical concepts of care.
• Principlesof growth and development.
• Disease processesand relatedtreatments / care / medications.
• Diagnostic / therapeuticprocedures and interventions.
• Assessments,treatments and medications related to forensicpatients.
• Work effectively and cooperativelywith a multidisciplinary team composed of professionals andparaprofessional persons from various communityagencies.
• Communicate orally and in writing ina concise and easily understandable manner, including patientdocumentation, and in interactions with otheragencies.
• Prioritize tasks and work effectivelywith complex tasks under pressure / time restraints / irregularschedules.
• Maintain confidential patientinformation.
• Clinical forensic nursing patientassessment and the use of equipment / instruments relevant toforensic patient care.
• Effective interpersonalcommunication and team skills which include listening, andinterviewing techniques with patients, families, andstaff.
• Problem solving techniques, criticalthinking skills, and decision making.
• RN -Registered Nurse - State Licensure and / or Compact State LicensureUpon Hire - required
