The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Lab Manager.

About the Opportunity

As a Lab Manager, you will provide guidance and direction to the instructional laboratories and their instructors; to ensure the pedagogical effectiveness of the laboratories in the education of the students enrolled in them.

Wellness programs

What You'll Do

Lab management : Oversee the introductory laboratories. Maintain an inventory of equipment. Purchase disposable supplies and replacement equipment.

Monitor equipment to ensure all are functioning properly. Manage or perform weekly setup and break down of the introductory labs.

Coordinate with physics and astronomy personnel to create new laboratory material as needed. Oversee weekly laboratory meetings for courses without course coordinators.

Monitor safety standards of laboratory spaces and experiments. Ensure needed maintenance of laboratory spaces and equipment is performed.

Be available to fix lab equipment problems during business hours.

Teaching Assistant (TA) Management : Make TA teaching assignments. Manage emergency changes in TA assignments. Develop and administer a TA training program consistent with best practices.

Develop and administer a TA evaluation plan. Be available to assist with instructional problems during business hours.

Demonstration management : Maintain an inventory of the demonstration collection. Repair or replace any broken or damaged equipment.

Develop instruction for safely using each demonstration. Manage the delivery and setup of demonstrations in classrooms. Develop an outreach demonstration collection.

Train volunteers in the use of demonstrations for outreach events. Develop new demonstrations as needed for instructional purposes.

Teaching : Teach one class per semester generally in the introductory sequence using research-based methods.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physics.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience :
  • Working in laboratory setting
  • Planning & Lab Operations
  • Pedagogy / physics education research
  • Safety : fire, emergency, laboratory, chemical, regulatory
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and / or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Organizational : planning, budgeting, scheduling, training, inventory maintenance and control.
  • Personal : problem / complaint resolution (students, teaching assistants, faculty, other staff, parents), ability to interact in normal communications with previously mentioned groups, time management
  • Content-specific : The candidate is expected to have or develop an understanding of research-based methods in classroom, laboratory, and demonstration education.

Toward this end, the candidate is expected to involve themselves in the relevant communities or practice both within WVU and outside WVU.

  • Teaching : training of teaching assistants through yearly workshops and regular meetings during the academic year. Periodic teaching of a course at the introductory level or a laboratory section.
  • Functional : ability to use a variety of electrical and electronic instruments, (including computers) and mechanical equipment (hand and power tools).

Maintain and, to the level of a semi-skilled worker, repair same. Knowledge of safety in the teaching and use of equipment.

Knowledge of applicable regulations, standards, and laws.

  • Knowledge of electronics, computers, interfacing, networking, use of tools.
  • Knowledge of physics.

Preferred Qualifications

Supervisory & training (native as well international Teaching Assistants).
