Position Summary

The Student Center Operations is accepting applications for its Director of Student Center Operations position.

The Director will provide senior leadership and oversight for Student Center Operations that includes the Jackson State University Student Center, Reddix Hall, and Gibbs-Green Memorial Plaza.

This includes responsibility for : room reservations, event planning, marketing, conference and event services, room set-ups, audio-visual and technical set-up with Information Technology support, custodial concerns, emergency situations, and maintenance needs;

and ensures a safe and clean environment for all visitors to the facilities requiring a flexible schedule that adapts to meet program and event needs and includes evening and weekend hours.

Qualifications Minimum Required Education

  • Master’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree in business, student personnel or higher education administration is preferred.

Minimum Required Experience Seven (7) years related experience and / or training in college student activities and union programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : This position requires and advances KSA’s in the following primary areas : teamwork, problem solving, creative thinking, oral and written communication, critical thinking, and leadership.

Extensive knowledge and usage of Event Management Software. Language Skills : Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.

Ability to respond to common inquiries of complaints from customer, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and / or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills : Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability : Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides senior leadership for the department.
  • Responsible for the management and execution of high-quality events and conferences that support and enhance the University’s reputation, its priorities, and its constituents.
  • In collaboration with Events and Visitor Services, provides a one-stop-shop resource to guide customers through the event, conference, camp, and meeting management process to create a desired experience, while reaching outlined goals and objectives.
  • Ensures proper reservation of space, coordination of events, creation of conference and event policies, and service delivery to all clients as well as ensure consistent booking campus, external and community events.
  • Provides senior leadership and oversight for Student Center to ensure proper hiring, staffing, scheduling, training, and discipline of student staff.
  • Ensures other operational needs are met as well as maintenance on all electronic and audio-visual equipment and proper event setups that include electronic and audio-visual equipment.
  • Development of policy and operating procedures for Student Center Operations.
  • Inventory control for on purchases of new technology, equipment, furniture, and related items by staying abreast of the latest advances in technology and current trends in college unions.
  • Troubleshooting complex equipment problems. Consults with Information Technology, Facilities & Construction Management and works with contractors regarding purchase, installation, and servicing of new or existing technology systems, furniture, fixtures, and equipment in the facilities.
  • Provides oversight for, hardware and software upgrades to Student Center security camera system.
  • Provides direction, leadership, and oversight for all departmental personnel actions, including selection, training, evaluation, and supervision of a diverse team comprised of two (2) full-time staff and ten (10) student staff.
  • Administers, and is fiscally responsible for annual budget and revenue generation. Serves as a good steward of university funds by striving to increase revenues and decrease expenses via strategic planning and implementation of efficiency measures.

Develops marketing strategies to increase the awareness and usage for all facilities and departments under the oversight of the Director.

  • Develops and executes departmental strategic planning, data informed policy development, and assessment of student learning outcomes and divisional student success and assessment initiatives.
  • Directs the establishment, implementation and enforcement of department priorities, policies, procedures and practices for operations, fire / life safety and risk management.
  • Creates and engages in strategic partnerships with campus departments, campus auxiliaries, faculty, staff, students, and alumni to create student centered initiatives that focus on the development of a vibrant campus community to positively impact student retention, persistence, and graduation rates.

Works collaboratively with campus departments to ensure services to students are delivered effectively. Serves as the departmental representative to the Division of Student Affairs leadership team, and other divisional or campus-wide committees or initiatives.

Serves at the state, regional, or national level with associated professional organizations.

Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work;

appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Performs other duties as assigned.
