The Genetic Counselor will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a cancer genetics setting.
The Genetic Counselor I will be responsible for seeing patients in multiple clinics, including main campus and other affiliates, including Torrance.
This role is hybrid, requiring 2 days in the office and 3 days remote.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Genetic Counselors working under a valid Temporary Genetic Counselor License are permitted to perform the following duties only under direct supervision of a Medical Doctor or fully licensed Genetic Counselor :
- Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost.
- Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork.
- Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and / or supervising physician.
- May provide case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.
- Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support.
- Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.
- Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.
- Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s) and / or supervising physician(s).
- Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her / himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.
- Provides genetic counseling in accordance w / applicable standards of professional care.
- Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature.
- Stays current in GC field.
Requirements :
- Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling.
- ABGC eligible or certified (or equivalent). Expected to obtain ABGC / ABMG certification.
Experience :
- Open to new graduates and those with one to ten (1-10) years’ experience in genetic counseling.
- Ability to work independently. Demonstrates refined analytic and diagnostic reasoning skills. Ability to clearly explain complex medical information in both verbal and written form.
- Demonstrates organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Computer experience preferred. Bilingual skills a plus.
