A Brief Overview

This position is 0.5 -20 hours a week, Part Time Benefitted position. It could be weekdays or 1-2 Saturdays or Sundays a month.

This EEG extern position requires a certificate of current enrollment in a Neurophysiology program.

Works within the Neurodiagnostic Department to deliver limited EEG care support services under the supervision of an individual holding an ABRET registered electroneurodiagnostic certification, providing supportive care to patients, including surveillance of monitoring equipment, and assists neurodiagnostic care practitioners in the provision of care to pediatric patients and their families.

Performs necessary duties which assist the Neurodiagnostic R. EEGT / Preceptor.

What you will do

  • Practice Under supervision of R. EEGT. / Preceptor assists in the provision of care to patients and families
  • Demonstrates ability to perform equipment set-up and monitoring under direct supervision of R. EEGT / Preceptor.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform responsibility in the Set up room under direct supervision of the R. EEGT / Preceptor.
  • Assists R. EEGT / Preceptor with direct patient care as follows :
  • Clinical signs
  • Assists with procedures by anticipating needs of R.EEGT and preparing for and setting up of equipment, including positioning, holding, and comforting patients.
  • Anticipates equipment / supply needs for the admission or discharge of patients in the routine EEG lab and also in the EMU.

Sets-up and removes supplies and equipment from patient room for next admission.

  • Responds according to hospital procedure in emergency situations.
  • Attends neurology rounds and bi-weekly record review.
  • Demonstrates skill in use of EEG / LTM monitoring equipment.
  • Immediately responds to alarms and directly assesses the patient and reports to appropriate health care team member.
  • Assists with work in the department Treatment Room, equipment room and EEG tech review area.
  • Restrictions are as follows :
  • Administration of medications.
  • Performing EEG studies independently.
  • Giving Preliminary results to care givers
  • Independent care of patient.

  • Research Demonstrates on awareness of research.
  • Assists R. EEGT / Preceptor with data collection.
  • Assists R. EEGT / Preceptor with reviewing record and interpretations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of quality improvement activities.
  • Can perform a basic literature search on selected topic.
  • Learning Identifies own learning needs and obtains necessary education to meet requirements of position.
  • Examines successes and failures to improve performance.

  • Begins to demonstrate health care informatics competency in order to manage patient care, outcome data and current and emerging health care technology, which include :
  • Basic computer competency, including the effective use of patient care devices, computers, computer software programs such as e-mail and word processing programs, and shared network file space.
  • Information literacy, including the effective use of the Intranet and Internet to find electronic resources for patient care, respiratory practice and evidence-based decision-making;
  • Information management skills, including the effective use of the electronic health record and clinical information systems, the ability to collect clinical data using quality tools and the ability to discuss, evaluate and analyze outcome data presented in charts and tables.
  • Resource Management Begins to understand appropriate utilization of financial resources.

  • Monitors own use of supplies and equipment and minimized waste and / or misuse.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Certificate Current enrollment in a Neurophysiology Program Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Computer Competency (Preferred proficiency)
  • Navigation and basic search functions of the Internet using Internet Explorer (Preferred proficiency)
  • Use of Outlook 2007 email, opening of attachments, attaching new files to emails and saving attached files to computer (Preferred proficiency)
  • Basic use of computers, printers, monitors, patient care devices, and Fax machines (Preferred proficiency)
  • Information Literacy (Preferred proficiency)
  • Use of Internet and Intranet to look up basic electronic resources for practice (Preferred proficiency)
  • Ability to perform a literature search on the Internet and ability to find professional journal and / or research based articles
  • Ability to evaluate Internet sites for reliability
  • Information Management Literacy
  • Navigation of electronic health information records and ability to review specific patient data in a clinical information system
  • Understanding of policies and procedures around timeliness of care, use of a clinical information system and support of safe neurodiagnostic practice
  • Ability to collect raw clinical data using quality tools
  • Ability to discuss, evaluate and analyze outcome data presented in charts and tables
  • Discuss the responsibilities of each user of an electronic record related to confidentiality and privacy
  • Able to handle confidential information appropriately.

Licenses and Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex.

American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required
