Intermountain Health - Medical Director - Clinical Pathology

The Medical Director of Clinical Pathology is a system-wide role, responsible for overseeing Clinical Pathology for PALM Services for Intermountain's Clinical Shared Services.

This position ensures that patients, clinical teams, and physicians and advanced practice providers ("APPs") receive the safest and highest quality care and experiences from pathology and laboratory medicine, models and champions the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain, and is accountable to IHCHS administration for compliance with state and federal regulations and IHCHS policies, procedures, and guidelines.

The following information aims to provide potential candidates with a better understanding of the requirements for this role.

The leadership portion of this position is a .5 FTE, but can be combined with .5 FTE's worth of clinical work to equal a full-time position.

In this role, the Medical Director reports directly to the Senior Medical Director, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Medical Direction : Provides medical direction and oversight for all clinical pathology services within PALM Services, emphasizing safety, quality assurance, consumer and patient experience, and provider engagement.
  • Conformance with Policies : Ensures compliance with applicable IHCHS policies and procedures, TJC standards, CLIA, HIPAA, EMTALA, and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Records : Maintains accurate and complete administrative records in compliance with PALM Services and TJC requirements.
  • Training : Assists in the training of IHCHS personnel, providing education within the scope of the Medical Director's practice.
  • Development of Policies : Leads the development of standardized clinical pathology policies in accordance with Medical Staff Bylaws.
  • Quality of Care Utilization : Ensures regular performance of utilization and quality of care studies.
  • Clinical Pathology Services Coverage : Directs physician leadership to ensure medical support for Clinical Pathology.
  • Cooperation : Cooperates closely with other IHCHS departments.
  • Outside Agencies : Coordinates with outside agencies as necessary.
  • Equipment / Supplies : Determines the need for equipment and supplies and submits requisitions in accordance with IHCHS procedures.
  • Rules and Regulations : Adheres to professional ethics and IHCHS rules and regulations.
  • Meetings : Attends various meetings to provide clinical direction to PALM Services staff.
  • Professional Demeanor and Engagement : Maintains a professional demeanor and collegial relationships with staff, patients, and other healthcare community members.

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O. from an accredited institution.
  • Board certified in relevant Clinical Pathology specialty and active Utah Medical Licensure, or in the process of obtaining licensure.
  • Basic Life Support certification for healthcare workers.
  • Three (3) years of successful medical leadership experience.
  • Extensive medical practice experience and excellent leadership skills.
  • Sound understanding of modern healthcare economics and financial principles.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care : Safety, Quality, Patient Experience, Equity, Access, and Stewardship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of Pathology and Lab Medicine.
  • Experience in driving best practice development and adoption.
  • Leadership experience in an integrated Health System.
  • Experience with continuous improvement.
  • Experience in population health / proactive care.
  • Current academic appointment or eligibility.

Physical Requirements

  • Interact with others requiring verbal communication and the ability to hear and understand spoken information.
  • Operate computers and office equipment, requiring manual dexterity.
  • See and read computer monitors and documents.
  • Remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers and patients.
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate complex equipment with precision.

Scheduled Weekly Hours :

The hourly range for this position is $7.25 - $999.99, dependent upon experience.
