Job Description and Duties

DSH-Patton Human Resources Department is accepting applications for at least one (1) Permanent, Full-Time appointment for the Supervising Registered Nurse (Safety) position in the Clinical Administration (CA) Office.

This position exists under the direct supervision of the Assistant Clinical Administrator. Expected work hours may vary to meet the needs of the department.

The Supervising Registered Nurse (SRN) assists the Assistant Clinical Administrator, Program Directors, Nursing Coordinator, Central Nursing Services and Central Staffing Office with Quality Improvement Projects.

The SRN has the responsibility for supervision, direction, and coordination of nursing staff. The SRN provides an extension of the ACA’s authority as assigned.

Must have knowledge of the theories, practices, ethics, and values of the nursing profession; the Hospital Administrative Directives, Nursing Policy, and Procedures;

the policies regarding staff supervision, grievances, complaint handling according to the Department of State Hospitals.

  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, directing and coordinating emergency nursing services to patients, employees, and visitors of Patton State Hospital;
  • adjusts staffing when necessary to assure adequate staffing coverage; plans and assists in training of nursing staff; serves as a central location resource for primary contact after hours including acting as a liaison with outside facilities’ needs;
  • take active part of the Quality Improvement Projects of the hospital; provides guidance to nursing staff to help ensure they following Standards of Practice and are providing a safe and therapeutic milieu for patient care according to Licensing and regulatory agency requirements;

recommend, plan and implement nursing and hospital policies and procedures.

  • Qualified candidates should possess the following : strong leadership skills, exceptional clinical knowledge, and skills;
  • knowledge of nursing policies and procedures; knowledge of the Quality Improvement Program; excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • and the ability to problem solve and prioritize on a continual basis. Candidates should have excellent computer skills; the ability to demonstrate leadership;

and manage difficult situations calmly and professionally.

Required Qualifications : Ability to interpret and adhere to The Joint Commission Standards, Title 22 regulations, hospital policies and practices including the Nursing Policies / Procedures and Administrative Directives.

Staff shall not be on probation at the time of the submission of the application.

Desirable Qualifications : Previous experience as an SRN or in a leadership role for a minimum of two years. Interpersonal skills, written and communication skills, organization skills, strong attendance, and good judgement.

Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 andopened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civillycommitted patients within a secure treatment area.
