4909 Hourly / $73,821.07 AnnuallyCharacteristics of the JobUnder general supervision, is responsible for enforcement of adopted codes and ordinances through the provision of information to the public, review of proposed plans and inspection of new and altered electrical installations.

Work is of a technical nature with the inspector required to exercise independent judgment in the electrical field and one or more areas of construction expertise to protect the health and safety of humans and the environment through competent design, construction and installation practices.

Examples of DutiesInspect and test installation and repair of electrical systems to enforce adherence to national codes;

ensure that wiring is properly sized, that all services are inspected before power company connection, ensure that wiring is maintained in a safe condition.

Examine specifications, blueprints and plans of electrical installations; check such items as fuse size, fixtures and other wiring methods for compliance with codes, trade standards and ordinances.

Provide excellent customer service by working with builders, developers, architects, and engineers to find mutually beneficial solutions to building construction issues.

Promote the City’s economic well-being by finding mutually beneficial solutions to building construction issues which enable project completions.

Discuss wiring methods and installations with contractors, property owners and other interested parties; explain and interpret national codes, standards and ordinances.

Review permit lists for assigned inspection district to see that no illegal electrical work is being performed; review and authorize permits for electrical wiring.

Prepare daily, annual and other reports of inspections performed covering conditions found, actions taken and recommendations made for further action, as well as names of owners, builders and addresses of inspections, if possible.

Make monthly reports and all other reports as required.Interpret and review codes, standards and departmental regulations recommending changes when needed.

Serve as secretary to boards concerned with electrical codes.Train other inspectors in the electrical code, if needed.Make periodic inspections with other departments;

enforce related municipal codes.Attend local and national seminars for continued education of electrical codes.Other duties may be assigned.

Training and ExperienceHigh school diploma or GED equivalent; must have passed an accredited electrical apprenticeship program and four years as journeyman in the field;

significant experience, training and / or knowledge of at least one additional construction discipline; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesProficient knowledge in conducting inspections and plan reviews related to electrical codes and at least one other construction discipline as identified at the time of recruitment;
  • thorough knowledge of information concerning applicable theories, principles, techniques, materials, equipment and operation of all aspects of electrical systems;
  • of National Electrical Code and all related ordinances; good knowledge of legal procedures as related to the enforcement of municipal ordinances and codes;
  • and knowledge of other inspection codes.Exceptional skill in public and employee relations and in maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, officials, contractors, property owners;
  • skill in preparation of all professional reports and any related written correspondence; interpreting the code and to expedite unforeseen situations which occasionally arise;

spelling and math for miscellaneous duties to perform general procedures and assignments; explaining codes to a variety of audiences.

  • Ability to read and interpret plans and blueprints and to recognize deviations from such plans in the construction process;
  • assist in formulating installation procedures from blueprints to job site application; establish and maintain an effective working relationship with electricians, contractors, engineers, architects, general public and all related craft workers in field installations;
