The Assistant Radiation Safety Officer for Clinical Operations provides radiation safety support for ionizing radiation and radioactive material use under the clinic's Specific Radioactive Materials License, in coordination with the overall efforts of the Fred Hutch Environmental Health & Safety Department (EH&S).

This position may also provide support for radiation use in laboratory research settings as needed under the research Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY / ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

Manages the daily and routine operations of the Radiation Safety Program in healthcare licensed locations, including scheduling of surveys and audits, leak tests, calibrations, air emissions reports, and contamination control.

  • Consults with Fred Hutch employees and patients in a positive and proactive manner regarding recognized and potential radiation exposure hazards.
  • Review and evaluate clinic staff dosimetry results.
  • Calibrate portable survey instruments used in monitoring laboratories for radioactive contamination.
  • Provides training for radioactive materials users, hot lab and hot suite users and one-on-one training as needed for lab workers.
  • Prepare materials for Radiation Safety Committee review.
  • Coordinates incident response with the Fred Hutch Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Part of the Fred Hutch EH&S emergency response team.
  • Provides shipping expertise for radioactive materials shipments.
  • Acts as Radiation Safety Officer for clinical operations in the RSO's absence.
  • Works collaboratively with clinicians and healthcare workers to ensure safe use of radioactive materials and radiation producing machines.
  • Coordinates training for technicians in Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology and other clinic areas as needed.
  • Maintains documentation as required by clinic radiation safety program.
  • Ensures radioactive materials, radiation producing machines, laser devices and other sources of non-ionizing radiation are used in medical settings in accordance with industry standards and regulatory, license, and institutional requirements.
  • Consults with patients and external agencies regarding safety of radiation therapies and treatments in accordance with the patient's healthcare team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in health physics, or related scientific field, and one or more years of professional experience in the practice of radiation safety in a healthcare setting;

or equivalent combination of education and experience essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop programs and make professional judgements based on health physics principles.
  • Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software, and database development and management.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.

REQUIRED LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS :

Eligible for CHP within 5 years

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified by the American Board of Health Physics (CHP)
  • Master's degree in Health Physics, Engineering, or Science
  • Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirements
  • Experience in a research setting

The annual base salary range for this position is from $80,434 to $120,619, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
