Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the Medication Nursing Assistant (MNA) administers medications and treatments to stable residential school students and completes documentation in accordance with established nursing standards.

The MNA is responsible for administering as needed (PRN) medications upon the delegation of an RN or LPN. The MNA is responsible for monitoring and providing for the medical needs of the students in accordance with Medication Administration Records (MAR), Treatment Administration Records (TAR), individual education plans, residential care plans and Health Center policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

1. Uphold Standards of Practice within Scope of Practice of LNA / MNA.

2. Administer medications under the supervision of a RN or LPN through the approved routes to stable clients. A stable student is considered to be a student whose health status is under control and raises no expectation that the student’s symptoms, vital signs, or reactions to medications will suddenly change.

An MNA may not administer injectable medications, medications that require a dosage calculation or conversion, or administer medications that require determination of the student’s need for medication.

3. Administer all scheduled medications (excluding injectables and tube feedings) in accordance with the six Rights of Medication Administration.

4. Document all medications administered or refused on the MAR per facility policy. Report to the RN or LPN appropriately.

5. Maintains neat, clean, and orderly medication room and cart, ensuring that all medications are returned to their respective slots / drawers, all slots / drawers are properly labeled, and all medications are properly labeled and dated, while checking for expiration dates and notifying a nurse of expired medications.

6. Administers and documents PRN medications as delegated by an RN or LPN

7. Counts, administers and documents prescribed controlled substances

8. Clarifies any order or treatment regimen considered to be inaccurate, ineffective or contraindicated by consulting with RN or LPN.

9. Reports known or possible errors or unexpected effect of medication administered to supervising RN or LPN.

10. Maintain inventories by medication monitoring of quantities and need for reorders . OTCs, supplements through central supply.

11. Order medication and supplies from the pharmacy except newly ordered medications. May accept medications from the pharmacy and sign them in (excluding controlled substance which require RN or LPN signature).

12. Follows all infection control and safety protocols.

13. Obtains weights, heights and vital signs as requested by the nurse.

14. Filing of documents in EHR.

15. Communications with parents / guardians regarding medication supplies.

16. Continuously work toward upgrading knowledge and abilities and keep updated on current practices, issues and literature.

17. Complete 20 hours of CEU’s bi-annually.

Additional Responsibilities

1. Completion of a physical every three years per child care licensing regulations.

2. Perform all duties in an ethical and professional manner, support the team concept and pursue professional growth and development.

3. Maintain harmonious relations and demonstrate tact and sensitivity in responding to staff, students, parents / guardians and others.

4. Accept and render constructive criticism in a professional and mature manner.

5. Uphold the mission of Seven Hills New Hampshire (SHNH) as put forth in the Workplace Culture and Values statement

Physical Requirements

Physical strength / endurance to participate in the following activities when necessary.

1. Independent movement / transfer of student weighing up to 50 pounds.

2. Assisted (2 or more person) movement / transfer of student regardless of weight as necessary.

3. Assisting when necessary in the escorting / restraining of acting out students from one area to another

4. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling items weighing up to 50 pounds.

5. Standing / walking / climbing stairs as required.

6. Ability to walk or stay seated for long periods of time as necessary in the performance of administrative duties including the operation of the computer programs.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Valid unrestricted medication nursing assistant license issued by the NH Board of Nursing
  • A minimum of one full year of experience is required (two years or more preferred)
