Job Description Summary :
KU School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding foundational scientist to join the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
This is a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track position to develop and conduct an independent research program, engage in teaching medical and graduate students, and serve the KUMC community.
The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level.
The Department seeks strong applicants with demonstrated track records of publications and interdisciplinary collaborations, with a focus on discovering mechanisms of basic molecular and / or biochemical processes.
We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong research program that synergizes with the current faculty members of the department and research centers at KUMC.
Technical expertise should include advanced molecular, cellular, biochemical, and / or structural biology approaches. Opportunities exist and are encouraged for collaborations with faculty in the University of Kansas NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the KUMC Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, KU Diabetes Institute, KUMC Kidney Institute, Kansas Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research and the Center for Children's Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition, as well as multiple other centers and departments.
We offer a competitive start up package and an impressive array of core facilities that support metabolic, mitochondrial, proteomic, genomics, cryo-EM structural studies, and imaging needs of the research program.
The position will also allow for teaching in the medical school curriculum and graduate programs which includes the PhD program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Applications will be considered from early career scientists. Academic appointment, compensation, and a start-up package at the Assistant Professor level, will be competitive and commensurate with experience, scientific accomplishments, and needs.
Appointments at the assistant professor rank are accompanied by an initial probationary period of seven years. Criteria for promotion include significant achievements in teaching, research / scholarship, and service.
The award of tenure is based on potential for sustained contributions, performing beyond expected duties, and demonstrating leadership and innovation.
The expectation is that the investigator will maintain an extramurally funded research program and make significant achievements in research, teaching, and service to enhance the mission and reputation of the University.

Required Qualifications
Education : PhD, MD / PhD, or equivalent in one of the biological sciences with research experience in molecular mechanisms broadly relevant to human disease.
Work Experience :
- History of or potential to develop an externally funded research program.
- Evidence of high quality, peer-reviewed publications in related areas with the candidate as one of the intellectual drivers of the project.
- Ability to work both individually and collaboratively within a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.
- Documented expertise in biochemical research using cutting-edge technologies
Preferred Qualifications
Education :
- Post-doctoral experience in academic or private health-related research environment.
- Evidence of effective teaching; potential to participate in teaching medical students and to mentor and supervise graduate students.
Skills :
- Collaboration skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Job Duties :
- Develop and maintain an externally funded research program in the area of metabolism research, broadly defined.
- Establish collaborations with KUMC colleagues in the basic sciences and partner with faculty in Centers and Institutes, such as the University of Kansas NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the KUMC Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, The Kidney Institute, KU Diabetes Institute, Kansas Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research and the Center for Children's Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition.
- Collaborate with other faculty members as part of interdisciplinary research teams.
- Contribute to the educational enrichment of medical and / or graduate students in topics related to metabolism and biochemistry.
- Be involved in graduate student education for the programs of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department and the KUMC Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in the Biomedical Sciences.
- Prepare and present lectures, participate in small group teaching. There is also the potential for teaching faculty, residents, and students in the partnering clinical departments.
- Serve on committees at KUMC and in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, serve on academic or service committees and contribute to other projects assigned by the Chair.
- Participate in departmental committees, activities, and faculty meetings.
- Provide other services to the school, university, and community, as appropriate.
- Collaborate with external investigators in area of expertise.
