DEFINITION
Under immediate supervision, to perform unskilled and low level semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and improvement of public works and park facilities;
to operate maintenance and construction tools and equipment; and to perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs unskilled and low level semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on various City facilities and structures including streets, parks, sewer, and other public facilities;
- loads and unloads maintenance and construction materials from trucks; mixes concrete; waters, weeds, mows and cleans park areas;
- digs and back fills trenches; assists on concrete, masonry and asphalt repair work and the installation of sewer laterals;
- rakes and finishes asphalt; repairs and replaces city sign posts and traffic signs; performs USA markings on city streets;
- does general clean up work; assists in performing general maintenance duties inside and outside of buildings including painting, removing graffiti, installing doors and windows, and moving furniture;
- cleans, sanitizes, and maintains assigned buildings, offices and restroom facilities; assists in repairing a variety of interior and exterior building and facility components and systems including plumbing and electrical systems;
- drives pick-up or other light trucks; operates construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as vibrator roller, back hoe, loaders, fork lift, jack hammer, and chain saw;
maintains hand tools and assigned equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
- Knowledge of : basic methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned;
- common hand tools; basic knowledge of methods and techniques of repairing sidewalks, curbs and related maintenance areas;
knowledge of basic practices and procedures of traffic control; knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Ability to : perform a variety of maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned; use common hand tools;
- perform heavy manual labor; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures; knowledge of principles and practices of record keeping;
read and write; follow written and oral directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience : Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be :
Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in general laboring work.
Licenses / Certificates : Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained as valid during the course of employment.
