This position will perform complex technical and related duties for the Department of Surgery Trauma and Burn registries, including entering, analyzing, reviewing, abstracting, and coding medical information obtained from a variety of EMS and outside hospital records as well as hospital data sources such as documents, reports, lab and radiology profiles, on-line records and other summaries initiated in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Information abstracted is used for performance improvement, benchmarking, research, and is required for verification as a Level I Adult & Pediatric Trauma Center as well as a verified Burn Center.
The data is also reported to the Iowa Department of Public Health as required by the Iowa Trauma State Statute.
- Maintains the trauma and burn registries for University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
- Identifies patients meeting criteria for entry into the trauma / burn registries.
- Maintains computerized log of trauma / burn patients.
- Accurately enters data into the trauma / burn registries.
- Maintains a working knowledge of criteria necessary to maintain trauma and burn center verifications.
- Participates as an integral member of the trauma and burn performance improvement programs by maintaining knowledge of current and ongoing PI projects, definitions and results of benchmarking and risk adjusted reports.
- Performs projects and tasks as assigned.
- Code and abstract cases requiring knowledge of multiple complex coding systems.
- Accurately abstracts data, diagnoses and procedures / operations from patient charts and electronic medical records.
- Accurately assigns codes and scores of all injuries utilizing Abbreviated Injury Scale and ICD-10 systems.
- Reviews, corrects and validates registry data on a monthly basis and prior to submission to reporting agencies.
- Works as a team to complete timely data entry (concurrently, retrospectively) and data validity. Participates in activities that ensure interrater reliability / accuracy checks.
- Ensures confidentiality of patient data and takes appropriate precautions to ensure security of data.
- Manages data and prepares reports monthly and as requested.
- Assists with meeting reporting requirements of the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB), National Burn Registry (NBR), Trauma & Burn Quality Improvement Projects (TQIP / BQIP) and others as appropriate.
- Demonstrates capability to use and troubleshoot computer hardware and registry software.
- Assist with basic reporting of standard monthly / quarterly / annual reports.
- Works cooperatively with outside hospitals, agencies and other departments to obtain necessary information.
- Assists with activities to prepare for and maintain verification by regulatory agencies (American College of Surgeons, American Burn Association).
- Provides training and technical support for the Trauma / Burn registries by participating in staff orientation and training of additional registry personnel as appropriate.
- Assists in trauma / burn research, education, and other activities as requested.
- Participates in professional development to assure skills and relevant knowledge and to maintain requirements for certifications and special programs.

Schedule : Monday-Friday : 08 : 00 a.m. 05 : 00 p.m.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment.
Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Required Qualifications :
- A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or RN is required.
Desirable Qualifications :
- Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations is desired.
- Experience working with Trauma or Burn registries or other healthcare registries is desired.
- Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) is desired.
Highly Desired Qualifications :
- Experience managing complex information requiring attention to detail is highly desired.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, needing minimal guidance is highly desired.
- Knowledge of medical record coding practices, procedures, and reference sources is highly desired.
