Qualifications
Education and Experience : Two years of college coursework.
Substitution of Experience for Education : Two years of laboratory or law enforcement experience can substitute for the required education.
NSQs : Applicants for this class must :
- 1. Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint based criminal history records check;
- 2. Complete a criminal history and background disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority and agree to release all records involving any criminal history or necessary records to the appointing authority;
- 3. Be subject to an intense background investigation in a manner prescribed by the appointing authority, which includes but not limited to a check of State and Federal criminal records, driving history, social media accounts, credit check, education, military, previous employment, drug use, and reference verification as well as a polygraph examination to this effect, which will require some travel to the appointment;
- 4. Must participate in pre-employment, random and for cause drug and substance abuse testing as required by departmental policies and procedures;
5. Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position.
Overview
This classification receives and stores evidence for processing and assists TBI Forensic Scientists with case files and evidence retrieval for court or testing purposes.
This classification performs responsibilities at the entry / training level under the direct guidance of a supervisor. This series has second, third, and fourth levels that function at a more complex capacity.
An applicant appointed to this Career Path series will be reclassified to the next higher class in the series after successful completion of a mandatory probation period;
unacceptable or needs improvement performance during the probation period will result in automatic demotion or termination.
Responsibilities
1. Orders and / or distributes laboratory supplies for TBI Forensic Laboratories to maintain daily function of each unit.
2. Receives and returns evidence for local law enforcement.
3. Retrieves and returns case files and / or evidence at the request of TBI Forensic Scientists for court or testing purposes.
4. Provides court testimony to establish chain of custody and demonstrate any laboratory activities performed.
5. Generates reports and / or performs testing of evidence samples for assigned forensic disciplines. Prepares reagents, performs instrument maintenance, and performs reagent quality control checks.
6. Utilizes the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to create cases, create exhibits, track case progress, generate reports, etc.
to establish and maintain a chain of custody.
7. Opens and documents evidence (e.g., blood alcohol kits, CODIS kits, etc.) to establish the integrity for testing.
8. Trains on procedures for entering, retrieving, and returning evidence for TBI Special Agents from their designated evidence vault.
9. Communicates discrepancies with evidence and / or current testing status to local law enforcement and district attorneys, etc.

TN Driver Standards
State of Tennessee positions that may involve driving responsibilities require candidates to meet the following minimum driver qualifications :
- A valid driver's license
- For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations : driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
