Reports To : Finance Director and / or Senior Accountant

Salary Range : $61,000-$76,000

Position Summary :

The City of Pontiac, Michigan, is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Accountant to join our Finance Department.

The accountant will be responsible for maintaining financial records, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

This position plays a critical role in managing the City's financial health and supporting the Finance Director in budgeting, financial planning, and audit processes.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Financial Reporting : Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, including general ledger entries, financial statements, and reports.
  • Budgeting : Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and monitor expenditures to ensure adherence to budgetary constraints.
  • Accounts Payable / Receivable : Manage the processing of invoices, payments, and receipts. Ensure timely reconciliation of accounts.
  • Bank Reconciliation : Perform monthly bank reconciliations to ensure accuracy and consistency in financial records.
  • Fixed Asset Capitalization : Oversee the tracking and capitalization of fixed assets, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with capitalization policies.
  • Month-End Close : Manage the month-end close process, including the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports.
  • Audit Preparation : Coordinate with external auditors during annual audits and ensure the provision of necessary documentation and information.
  • Compliance : Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations and guidelines. Prepare and submit required financial reports and filings.
  • Internal Controls : Develop and maintain internal control procedures to safeguard the City's assets.
  • Grant Management : Oversee the financial administration of grants, including tracking expenditures and preparing financial reports.
  • Special Projects : Participate in and contribute to special financial projects as assigned by the Finance Director.
  • Collaboration : Work closely with other departments to provide financial insights and support.

Qualifications :

  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or CMA certification is preferred.
  • Experience : Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in government or public sector finance.
  • Skills :
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions :

  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel for training or meetings.
  • Standard work hours, with some flexibility required for budget cycles and audits.
