The primary purpose of the Direct Support Professional is to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who need support to lead a safe, self-directed life to participate fully in their communities.
To assist individuals with intellectual disabilities (mild to severe) in leading a self-directed life and contribute to the community.
To aid in assisting with activities of daily living if needed, and encourage attitudes and behaviors that enhance community inclusion.
As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you, will provide support at home, work, and other community places.
Direct Support Professional Skills :
The job of a Direct Support Professional (DSP) is a very significant one. It is important to have compassion, creativity, and integrity when supporting our individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A DSP will assist a person, with developmental disabilities, to have a meaningful, safe and self-directed life, skills are needed which include the following but are not limited to :
- provide quality care of individuals in their home
- ensure supports and services are person-centered
- provide breakfast lunch dinner dietary options for individuals daily
- promote physical health and emotional well-being
- provide responsible and accountable financial management
- maintain confidentiality
- drive individual to doctor's appointments, school, work, and community based activities
- support individual to form new relationships
- maintain existing relationships
- document daily reports electronically

- Providing companionship and supportive listening
- Reporting changes in the health or status of the client
- Feeding clients
- Maintaining patient's health equipment
- Responding to emergency situations
- Administering medication
- Transporting client to appointments
- Facilitating community and recreational outings, including transport
- Providing support with hobbies, studies, and social activities
