The technical specialist position in Clinical Hematology and Chemistry laboratories will be under the direct supervision of the Hematology and Chemistry Technical Directors and Medical Directors.

This role is primarily focused on supporting sign-out and review of pathology cases by Chemistry / Hematology / Hematopathology attendings with medical oversight by these faculty.

Responsibilities include review of current and prior clinical and laboratory findings, triage of slide materials for review by faculty, collation of laboratory findings, preparation of initial interpretations of laboratory reports, including flow cytometry, hemoglobin electrophoresis, peripheral blood and bone marrow smear morphology and cell differential, body fluid morphology, special coagulation, protein electrophoresis, immunofixation and immunoglobulin quantitation.

Additional responsibilities include instructing and training of pathology residents and fellows. Performs other technical and ad hoc administrative tasks, including participation in quality assurance / quality improvement projects, such as development, and evaluation, of new tests and analysis as appropriate.

Clinical Chemistry

Interpretation and / or collation and integration of draft elements (. serum and urine electrophoresis and immunofixation, measurement of immunoglobulins G, A and M and Kappa and Lambda free light chains, information on monoclonal antibody therapy) of reports, including review of current and prior clinical and laboratory findings.

Hematology and Hematopathology Services

Interpretation and / or collation and integration of draft elements (., flow cytometry, rapid heme panel, cytogenetics, peripheral blood or bone marrow smear) of reports, including review of current and prior clinical and laboratory findings.

Combined Responsibilities

  • Appropriate assessment of the need for additional clinical laboratory testing or special studies.
  • Entering laboratory findings and preliminary drafts of interpretive laboratory reports into computer and run computer programs for the generation of drafts of interpretive laboratory reports, using the laboratory information system.
  • Formal instruction and guidance of pathology residents and fellows in the handling of tissue(s), interpretation and collation of data, as well as help with on-boarding of new trainees to the service.
  • Communication with outside hospitals and providers for second opinion cases to facilitate acquisition of materials or clinical history.
  • Demonstration of astute judgment when handling patient material and reports.
  • Troubleshooting of problems that arise dealing with mislabeling or other problems with specimens, working with technical and medical staff and other departmental personnel as necessary, as well as other clinical staff in the hospital.
  • Aids laboratory technicians and administrative assistants, as needed, on clinical and technical problems and interpretation of results.

Quality Assurance

  • Assists laboratory leadership by assuring consistent and proper performance of laboratory testing.
  • Participates in QA / QI projects, including development, evaluation, and implementation of new tests and analysis and implementation of tests, in collaboration with technical and medical staff, and support for initiatives within the Clinical Hematology and Chemistry Laboratories.
  • Works collaboratively and functions as an effective member of the health care team.
  • Communicates effectively with clinical technologists, residents, fellows, and attending physicians.
  • Actively participates in resident teaching conferences, tumor board and integrative diagnostic boards for the services.
  • Participates in internal and external continuing education programs and helps to manage the certification of these programs.
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Follows all Joint Commission Patient Safety Goals and related BWH Laboratory and Hospital Policies.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.

Qualifications

Qualifications - External

  • Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university Or Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403 1495.
  • Prior experience with clinical chemistry and hematology laboratory testing, including peripheral blood, body fluid, and bone marrow morphology, protein electrophoresis testing, hemoglobin electrophoresis testing, coagulation testing, and clinical flow cytometry strongly preferred.
  • MT (ASCP) or equivalent certification required.
  • A minimum of three years of clinical laboratory experience with preference for prior work experience in an academic setting required.
  • Specialty certification preferred.
