Job Description :

The Library Web and Applications Developer is a core member of the Library Digital Technologies development staff. The developer supports and enhances the Brown Digital Repository (BDR) and its ecosystem of web applications, regularly works with the Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) on faculty projects, and supports the John Hay Library staff to support and enhance special collection digitization projects and web applications.

This position also supports special projects affiliated with peer institutions such as developing and contributing to a combined data lake of university holdings for interlibrary borrowing and collections analysis, and working with the Digital Public Library of America to enable Brown to play a leading role in enabling smaller libraries and local historical societies to contribute their holdings data.

In addition, the developer meets Library project needs that arise such as developing interfaces and integrations with enterprise University systems or Library systems, as well as development projects that range from small file uploaders to larger web applications.

The developer is actively involved in the planning, development, project management and review aspects of the work. In addition, this position continuously learns about and shares with the team Library best practices, tools, trends, and suggestions for new initiatives.

and a revisioned special collections program that is positioning the John Hay Library as a research destination and leader in reparative and community-based collecting.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-4+ years of experience using Python or a similar language, developing and implementing robust systems, enhancements / fixes and / or integrations between systems.
  • Ability to learn new technical skills quickly; willingness to adapt emerging technologies to new domains.
  • Experience working with a web-application framework such as Django or Rails.
  • Demonstrated proficiency applying best practices to, planning and documenting technical projects; strong service orientation and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
  • Experience with Linux server platforms and related deployment tools and practices.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and creative problem-solving skills. Skilled analyst with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with the following is preferred but not required :
  • Version control systems (e.g., git / GitHub) and common team collaboration tools
  • Search / index technology such as Apache Solr
  • Digital repository systems housing a variety of data types; familiarity with IIIF protocol.
  • Academic library applications, policies and practices, and metadata standards
  • Best practices, standards, and trends in the application of technology in libraries (e.g., Open Access, digital preservation)
