The BLM Veterans Wildfire Mitigation Crew is a non-benefited position that is available for veterans to assist the City of Rapid City with wildfire preparedness in hazardous fuel removal.
The intention of this program is to provide training to veterans who are recently transitioning from active duty back to civilian life.
Preference is given to veterans who can provide a DD-214 and have finished active duty within the last five years prior to submitting an application.
This position is meant to provide training in areas of firefighting, emergency preparedness, equipment operation, forestry, parks, and public education.
This position will provide training to enhance the job skills and employment opportunities for qualified veterans. Funding for this position is provided by a grant from the Bureau of Land Management.
The maximum number of hours an employee can work in a calendar year is 1,560. Employment is conditional upon the availability of BLM funds and the availability of current assignments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following, other duties may be assigned.
- Implements forest management plans through trimming, thinning, and removal of trees deemed to be a threat to the health of the urban forest
- Rid tree debris through either chipping or burning of slash piles
- Operates large skid steer loader, hydraulic cutting head, dump truck, pickups, utility vehicles, and hand and power tools such as chainsaws and hand shovels
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment to maintain safe operation
- Works as a team member to accomplish the end goal of the project
- Must be able to obtain S-130 / 190 wildland firefighting certification, and S212 Wildfire Chainsaws

Education and / or Experience :
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Must be age 18 or older
Certificates, Licenses, Registration :
- Must possess a valid Class C driver's license or have the ability to obtain it within 30 calendar days from the date of hire.
- Must possess and present a DD214 at the time of application to prove veteran's status.
