Germantown Friends School is seeking a part-time coordinator for its recently created Upper School Science Research program.

This half-time position involves teaching science research sections that meet twice over an 8-day cycle, supporting student projects and mentorship opportunities, and working on the ongoing development of the program in coordination with GFS colleagues and the Science Research Design Committee.

Program Goal

The goal of the Science Research program is to inspire students to boldly explore and advance scientific frontiers. Through collaborative and independent work, students will engage in rigorous research experiences that will challenge them intellectually and develop their capacity in diverse science research lab settings.

Science research will offer training in lab skills and scientific research methodology and foster critical thinking and scholarship central to scientific inquiry.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • Working closely with the Science Department head to design a robust curriculum for the Science Research I and Science Research II courses.
  • Teaching rostered section(s) of Science Research I and II.
  • Supporting student-led science research projects and relationships with research advisors.
  • Representing the GFS Science Research Program at key events and other opportunities.
  • Managing a program budget in close coordination with the science department head.

Qualifications

  • Strong background in science research and instruction
  • Master’s degree required, doctoral degree preferred
  • Ability to work closely with students, school leadership, and faculty to enhance the GFS science curriculum
  • Ability to work closely and collaborate with external research programs
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
