Position Overview

The Director of the Master of Social Work Program has primary responsibility for the visioning, strategic planning, and implementation of all areas related to the MSW Program.

Job Responsibilities

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT (60%)

  • Provide vision and leadership for the on-campus MSW Program.
  • Oversee admissions, curriculum development and implementation, faculty teaching assignments, program assessment, and compliance with Council on Social Work Education accreditation standards.
  • Collaborate with the College of Education and Human Development's Graduate Program Office, the School of Social Work's Online MSW Program Director, and University leadership.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, students, university officials and partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Increase the School's connection with the practice community through active engagement with relevant professional associations at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of University practices and processes, as well as sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Collaborate with the Online MSW Program Director in the development of policies and procedures.
  • Co-lead the MSW Program Committee.
  • Collaborate with the Online MSW Program Director in updating and distributing the MSW Program Handbook to students and faculty.
  • Help address student and staff concerns -and make referrals, as needed, to appropriate University resources
  • Report to the Director of the School of Social Work.

TEACHING (15%)

  • Teach up to two courses per academic year in the MSW Program.
  • Create curricular content and update it regularly.
  • Maintain an up-to-date Canvas course site.
  • Provide individualized course-related support to students.

STUDENT, FACULTY, & ALUMNI ADVISING (20%)

  • Provide prospective and matriculated students with advising support regarding the MSW Program.
  • Provide up-to-date resources for teaching faculty and academic advisors.
  • Develop and lead pre-registration meetings for returning and incoming students.
  • Update advising materials for students and faculty.
  • Provide MSW students with information and documentation to help support their application for social work licensure.

SERVICE TO THE SCHOOL AND OTHER RELATED TASKS (5%)

  • Collaborate on and manage special projects, as needed.
  • Facilitate or attend events in the evening or on weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • MSW degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
  • Licensed as a social worker in Minnesota or capable of securing a license within 1 year of employment in the director's role.
  • 6 years of relevant work experience, which includes management experience.
  • Experience working with and advising students in higher education.
  • Experience working with a diverse student body.
  • Knowledge of Council on Social Work Education accreditation standards and processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or DSW in Social Work.
  • Experience teaching at the graduate level.
  • Experience managing an MSW program.
  • Experience teaching in a hybrid learning environment.
  • Experience with curriculum design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of Twin Cities Metro Area and statewide social services.
  • Information management knowledge and skills.
  • Experience with the Council on Social Work Education's reaffirmation of the accreditation process (e.g., leading a self-study process).

Founded in 1917, the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is the oldest social work program in a public land-grant university.

SSW is a unit within the College of

Education and Human Development, one of the leading colleges of education and human development in the country with programs and research in areas such as educational

psychology, child development, organizational leadership, family social science, and disabilities. The School offers a number of educational programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
