Ready to come out of the construction site trailer and back into the office to start your career supporting construction litigation claims?
Estimators support the Litigation and Damages team by developing construction cost estimates used in the preparation and evaluation of construction defect litigation claims.
Duties include estimating construction conditions alleged to be defective (siding, roofing, framing, fenestrations / flashing, concrete, foundations, site work, landscaping, interior finishes, etc.
reviewing construction drawings in comparison to specified scopes of work, reviewing construction project documentation and financials, and conducting research to determine reasonable costs owed to different parties in a lawsuit.
What you will be doing :
- Develop cost estimates for repair scopes of work based on engineering reports (typically cladding, framing, foundation, flatwork, civil, roofing, and interior scopes of work) for reconstruction projects.
- Review, comprehend, and price repair recommendations provided by Engineers or Architects detailing alleged construction and / or design deficiencies.
- Review and interpret building code as it applies to repair scope and pricing.
- Use On-Screen Takeoff to quantify repair scopes of work and Xactimate / RS Means to research unit pricing for the scope of work.
Solicit quotations and proposals from subcontractors and vendors and ensure said proposals satisfy the proposed scope of work.
Input data into Excel.
- Keep detailed notes regarding the basis for the estimate.
- Analyze construction plans, documents, and construction contracts to understand party responsibilities and allocate cost estimates to parties responsible for the alleged defect.
- Assist the project team in writing portions of the expert report.
- Perform periodic site inspections of projects and document as-built conditions.
- Represent VERTEX to clients in a professional manner, during on-site inspections, and in meetings.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management preferred) and prior work experience in construction estimating, restoration, engineering, or consulting setting.
- 5+ years of professional experience in an estimation role for vertical construction - commercial or residential focus - ground-up or restoration estimation
- Ability to interpret construction plans and understand construction means and methods; perform cost estimating for the repair recommendations.
- Experience with quantity takeoffs and unit of measure conversions. (sf, cf, cy, etc)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Proficient using MS Office suite - advanced Excel skills required - scheduling applications (P6) a plus.
- Working knowledge of construction billing methods and practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability and willingness to travel to client sites (valid driver’s license required).
- Self-driven - the ability to work with minimal oversight and meet deadlines
- Working knowledge of estimating databases (Xactimate, RSMeans, etc.) a plus.
- OSHA-10 or -30 construction safety certification preferred.
- AACE or other estimating certifications are a plus.
- Construction Management certifications are a plus.
- Ability to walk client sites during inspections, sometimes on uneven terrain, and carry construction tools and equipment (up to 30 pounds).
