About the Job

About the Job : An experienced analytical mass spectrometrist is sought to develop and validate biomarkers of exposures to environmental and dietary carcinogens, and their DNA adducts in cells and human tissues.

The research requires derivatization chemistry for tagging biomarkers to enhance analyte detection by LC / MS or GC / MS and mass spectrometric characterization of biomarkers in complex biological matrices.

The candidate is expected to work semi-independently in LC / MS development and validation of DNA adduct biomarkers employing triple quadrupole, ion trap and high resolution MS instruments, and GC / MS to measure volatile toxicants in tobacco smoke.

Qualifications

Required qualifications :

  • Doctoral Degree-required, preferred field of study analytical science, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field
  • Experience with Mass Spectrometry instrumentation; GC-MS and / or LCMS-MS and chemical derivatization
  • Extensive experience on operating and maintaining different mass spec instruments and data analysis software
  • This candidate should have a working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative analysis of biomarkers, trace-level analysis of biomolecules in vivo, and cell culture experience is preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills and experience in generating graphical outputs of data for reports and publications
  • The candidate must be organized and work diligently to meet timelines.

About the Department

The Masonic Cancer Center creates a collaborative research environment focused on the causes, prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer;

applying that knowledge to improve quality of life for patients and survivors; and sharing its discoveries with other scientists, students, professionals, and the community.

Founded in 1991, the cancer center became a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in 1998, one of only 51 institutions in the United States to hold this designation, which is awarded only to institutions that make ongoing, significant advances in cancer research, treatment, and education.

Many choose to work at the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota because they believe in our mission and are excited by our vision for the future.

We have a reputation as a great place to work, for our excellent leadership, and we are a strong community that values diversity.

The Turesky laboratory seeks to understand the roles of long-term exposures of environmental toxicants and endogenous electrophiles to causative factors for human diseases including cancer.

We use human cell lines, primary cells, tissues and biological fluids to investigate the toxicity of carcinogens, characterize their metabolic pathways, and their ability to form DNA and protein adducts in humans.

There are several chemicals present in the diet, tobacco smoke, and in traditional medicinal herbs that are the focus of our investigations.

The laboratory employs state-of-the-art-mass spectrometry methods to conduct metabolic and biomarker studies in humans.
