Position Overview
The Director of Legislative Affairs serves as the primary liaison between Cleveland County and legislative bodies, overseeing all legislative and governmental affairs.
This role is responsible for developing and executing strategies to advocate for the County’s legislative priorities, monitoring policy changes, and fostering strong relationships with local, state, and federal lawmakers to advance the County’s interests.

Compensation
Commensurate with education and experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- File all documents into corresponding files, while verifying the name and case number matches the pleadings.
- Rotate files from different places within the courthouse.
- Pull the files requested by the judge’s office.
- Verify the cases pulled for the judges are up to date prior to taking to the judge.
- Answer phones.
- Take the mail to the mailbox daily.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of legislative processes, government operations, and public policy.
- Strong analytical skills to assess the impact of proposed legislation on County operations and finances.
- Ability to develop and implement effective legislative strategies and advocacy plans.
- Proven track record in successfully advocating for policy initiatives.
- Proficient in drafting legislative reports, policy papers, and presentations.
- Ability to represent the County professionally in high-level meetings and negotiations.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
Legislative Monitoring and Compliance
- Monitor and track the progression of key legislative bills, proposals, and regulatory changes.
- Ensure that County policies and procedures are compliant with new or updated legislation and regulations.
Legislative Strategy and Advocacy
- Develop and implement legislative strategies aligned with the County's goals and priorities.
- Advocate for Cleveland County’s interests by engaging with local, state, and federal legislators.
- Monitor and analyze proposed legislation and policy changes that may impact the County’s operations, finances, or programs.
- Coordinate with County officials to develop policy positions and ensure legislative strategies are consistent with County objectives.
- Draft and propose legislation on behalf of the County, ensuring legal and policy accuracy.
Legislative Communication and Coordination
- Serve as the primary point of contact between the County and legislative bodies.
- Provide regular updates to County Commissioners and leadership on legislative developments and actions.
- Prepare and present reports, briefings, and testimony to support legislative and regulatory efforts.
- Facilitate communication between County departments and external agencies or legislative entities to align objectives and initiatives.
Relationship Building and Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with elected officials, legislative staff, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with other counties, municipalities, and regional partners to coordinate legislative efforts and form coalitions on shared priorities.
- Attend and represent Cleveland County at legislative hearings, meetings, and conferences to further the County’s interests.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- This position works in a comfortable office setting with a computer for a large percentage of the workday.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate files.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually mild.
- Ability to stand, reach, and bend 50% of the time.
- Operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine / printer, office telephone 75% of the time.
- Ability to lift 50 lb.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in entity advocacy, legislative analysis, and stakeholder engagement.
- Must have the ability to work independently without direct oversight.
Preferred Skills
- Juris doctorate.
- Working knowledge of LegisOK and eCapitol.
