Position overview
Delta Utilities is seeking a qualified senior staff accountant to support our growing team. Reporting directly to the Controller, the senior staff accountant is responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial reporting functions related to revenues and fuel costs of gas operations.
The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of gas utility operations, accounting principles, and regulatory requirements.
This is a full-time position based in New Orleans, Louisiana
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement processes for accurate revenue recognition, ensuring accurate and timely recognition of gas revenue in accordance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements
- Develop and implement processes for accurate and timely recording of gas expense in accordance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements
- Review and analyze revenues and fuel expense, identifying trends and variance
- Assist financial planning with revenue and fuel expense forecasting
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements, including FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) and state / local regulatory commissions, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for revenue and gas expense
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls to prevent errors and ensure accurate financial reporting for revenue and gas expense
- Provide financial analysis and data to support regulatory filings with regulatory agencies
- Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals
- Work closely with operations, regulatory, and customer service teams to align financial objectives with business operations
- Participate in cross-functional projects at enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in gas utility management
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field
- Relevant certifications, such as the CPA certification, preferred
- Minimum of five to seven years of experience in finance or accounting, preferably in the gas utility or similarly regulated industry
- Strong understanding of utility revenue, expense, accounting principles, and GAAP
- Knowledge of FERC regulations and other relevant industry standards
- Experience with financial reporting software (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and Microsoft Excel preferred
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication skills
- Strong leadership and communication skills

In 2023, Entergy announced that it had entered into an agreement with Delta Utilities to sell its Louisiana gas distribution business.
The natural gas utility currently serves more than 200,000 customers across East Baton Rouge and Orleans parishes. In February 2024, Delta Utilities entered into an agreement with CenterPoint Energy to acquire its Louisiana and Mississippi natural gas businesses, which currently serve approximately 381,000 customers.
Once the transactions are complete, Entergy's Louisiana natural gas operations and CenterPoint Energy's Louisiana and Mississippi natural gas systems will be operated by Delta Utilities.
