Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas Transmission and Distribution operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary

Gas System Operator is a shift employee who performs Gas System Operator work as an assistant to and under the direct supervision of a Gas System Operator.

Under the direction of the Gas System Operator, Apprentice / Provisional Gas System Operator is responsible for remotely operating (via computer) and manually monitoring the high-pressured natural gas transmission pipeline and communicating system status.

Provisional Journeyman Transmission Gas System Operator is one who will be expected to successfully complete their training to become a qualified Journeyman Operator.

Must comply with PHMSA Control Room Management Regulation, 49 CFR 192.631. A Transmission Gas System operator monitors the gas Transmission system, is a safety champion, has a high level of analytical skills and is trained to recognize an Abnormal Operating Condition (AOC), do an analysis of pressure trends and make a callout to the field.

Ability to recognize both audible and visual alarms is a requirement of the position. Gas Control monitors the entire service territory for PG&E so we handle many emergencies daily and are highly trained in emergency response.

You will work in a control room with a high level of technology that is recognized industry wide.

This position is subject to Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) review and approval at time of hire. Provisional hires will be required to participate in targeted training to achieve journey-level knowledge of the role and responsibilities.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting.

This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $65.

41 per hour. This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and / or alcohol screening.

Responsibilities

• Takes appropriate action in emergency situations, including emergency personnel callouts
• Compiles and generates reports using computer equipment and software.
• Manages all base radio communications, telephone and PC logging activities, and takes appropriate action when necessary, including emergency personnel callouts.
• Monitors and processes data pertaining to gas operations such as, but not limited to, gas quality and SCADA.
• Monitors maintenance activities involving gas routing based on new / non-routine and standard / routine job clearances.
• Updates various logs as required by Company standard practices to maintain CPUC compliance.
• Ensures safety, security and continuity of service of transmission and distribution systems and facilities.
• Assists in operator training for new and existing operators.
• DOT-Operations / Maintenance AND Emergency

Qualifications

Minimum :

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License
• Ability to work rotating 12 hour shift schedule
• Willingness to work in remote locations
• Ability to pass federally mandated random drug and alcohol testing
• If hired as Provisional, must pass the provisional training plan within timeline agreed to.
• Due to the 12 hour shifts, incumbents should expect to reside within a commutable distance of less than 90 minutes from the San Ramon Bishop Ranch headquarters in order to comply with Control Room Management federal regulations (CFR 49 192.631)
• Ability to work flexible schedules, extended hours, nights, weekends, and / or overtime (scheduled or ad hoc)

Desired :

• Related PG&E or Hiring Hall experience preferred
• Gas background experience or operations experience
• Graduate from one of the following : Power Pathway® program or one of the Power Pathway® endorsed programs.
• Experience performing data entry on a computer system
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via radio and phone
• Strong ability to understand and apply technical concepts and procedures
• Strong ability to successfully perform multiple tasks under pressure
• To better represent the communities we serve within a timely manner, applicants who live within 30 miles of the headquarter location will be given preference
