Our two campuses in Methuen and Haverhill have a total of 320 beds, and we are a full-service, acute care hospital offering comprehensive inpatient medical / surgical units, outpatient care, and 24 / 7 emergency services.

We have three behavioral health units : cardiac telemetry, and critical care service lines. Our Haverhill campus offers all private rooms, and our Methuen campus offers a new state-of-the-art catheterization suite and Joint Center of Excellence, named as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction+ Center for Knee and Hip Replacement.

Position Summary :

The Risk Manager (RM) is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day administration of the risk management program, including day to day management of the electronic event reporting system, event investigation, loss prevention and reduction, and claims management.

The RM oversees and reviews the reports entered into the electronic event reporting system and works with the clinical and medical staff throughout the organization to ensure a robust review process.

The RM works closely and collaboratively with the members of the Quality Department to assure regulatory and accreditation compliance.

The RM serves as a champion for identification, mitigation, management, and prevention of risk throughout the organization.

Responsibilities :

  • Oversees and reviews the reports entered into the electronic incident reporting system on a daily basis identifying incidents or trends that require notification to system leadership.
  • Monitor follow up of incidents, serving as a resource to managers.
  • Tracking and trending reporting related to the incident reporting system; prepares reports and data, assures accuracy, integrity and authorizations necessary prior to distribution and for submission of reports to outside and external agencies.
  • Participate in the investigation of incidents / events involving actual or potential injury to patients or visitors that could lead to lead to financial loss (e.

g., professional, institutional, and general liability; product liability).

  • Participate in root cause analysis, event debriefing and peer review as assigned.
  • Maintain awareness of requirements of regulatory bodies and accrediting agencies as they relate to risk management activities.

Provide information and assistance to staff in complying with federal and state law and regulations, regulatory standards, and Joint Commission requirements.

  • Aids in or prepares reports as required by external regulatory agencies related to incidents and incident reporting, and in the development of responses to inquiries from regulatory and licensing agencies under the direction of the director of risk management.
  • Provide on-going training of new and established users of the electronic incident reporting system.
  • Serve as an organization-wide resource regarding risk management issues.
  • Notify insurer of actual or potential claims.
  • Support claims management strategies and activities including : investigations; ongoing monitoring of defense activities;

and discovery requests / interrogatories

  • Participate in and provide risk management consultation to hospital committees
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with departments throughout the organization.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned

Qualifications :

Education : Bachelor’s degree in healthcare or related field required.

Related Experience : Required :

Required :

Knowledge of clinical quality, patient safety and / or patient satisfaction performance measures and indicators, data definitions and sources and relevant national databases and benchmarks;

knowledge of healthcare quality, safety and satisfaction data design, collection, aggregation, and summarization; and expert knowledge of performance improvement models, methods and systems required.

  • Proficient in Windows-based operating software and systems that include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, and MS PowerPoint.
  • Strong aptitude for hospital information systems and applications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and skills required.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with an ability to express and document situations and processes.
  • Highly motivated, success oriented, organized, and strong work ethic, with ability to work under minimal supervision, ability to adapt quickly to changes within the work environment required.

Preferred :

  • Registered Nurse and master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Five to seven years of relevant experience in hospital health care, quality improvement, patient safety and / or risk management.
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) preferred and required within 24 months of hire. Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership on projects providing subject matter expertise and technical direction to other project team members.

Experience in project development, project management and strong analytical skills, including data management and data analysis required.

Lean certification and experience preferred.

Must be a team player and have proven success applying a team approach and ability to work in conjunction with physicians, clinical managers, directors, and front-line staff in a supportive way to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

Is able to address difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
