Stationary Engineer

Stationary engineers and boiler operators control and maintain boilers, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment, turbines, generators, pumps, and compressors.

Stationary engineers and boiler operators start up, regulate, repair, and shut down equipment. They monitor meters, gauges, and computerized controls to ensure that equipment operates safely and within established limits.

They use sophisticated electrical and electronic test equipment to service, troubleshoot, repair, and monitor heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.

Stationary engineers and boiler operators also perform routine maintenance. They may completely overhaul or replace defective valves, gaskets, or bearings.

In addition, they lubricate moving parts, replace filters, and remove soot and corrosion that can make a boiler less efficient.

Stationary Engineer Duties Include :

• Operate engines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment
• Read gauges, meters, and charts to track boiler operations
• Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels
• Activate valves to change the amount of water, air, and fuel in boilers
• Fire coal furnaces or feed boilers, using gas feeds or oil pumps
• Inspect equipment to ensure that it is operating efficiently
• Check safety devices routinely
• Record data and keep logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activity

Stationary Engineer Qualifications :

• High school diploma, GED or suitable equivalent.
• 5+ years experience as a Stationary Engineer, and willingness to continue education in the HVAC field.
• HVAC Certification required.
• 2nd class stationary engineer certification in Buffalo, NY.
• In-depth knowledge of boilers and steam systems; HVAC / R systems; building automation systems.
• Experience with diesel engines, turbines, generators; pumps, piping and compressed gas systems.
• In-depth knowledge of HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, microprocessor, and pneumatic control systems.
• Ability to calibrate and test thermostats and DDC controls.
• Basic plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance knowledge.
• Ability to perform combustion analysis on gas fired equipment.
• Proficient in evacuation, recovery, and charging of refrigerants.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics.
• Ability to interpret diagrams, drawings and equipment manuals.
• Proficient in the safe use of hand and power tools.
• Ability to work at heights and on ladders.
• Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrate ability and willingness to take on responsibility and leadership roles.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Proficient with computers, phones, and other office equipment.
• Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
• Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
