is a leading breeder and distributor of flowers and vegetables around the globe. Located in the suburb of West Chicago (near Naperville and Geneva), our 60-acre property boasts 10 acres of display gardens.
The gardens are primarily used as a sales and marketing tool but also provide a great relaxation opportunity for staff at the home office.
Perennials, annuals, vegetables, roses, and shrubs are blooming from May through September.
PanAmerican Seed is seeking a motivated individual to lead efforts into understanding how genetics and the environment impact seed and pollen quality.
The Associate Scientist will conduct research in growth chamber and greenhouse environments and disseminate findings to production locations and the global research team.
Responsibilities
- Investigate watering, nutrition, and environmental variables critical to producing high quality pollen in production and deliver high quality seeds to our customers.
- Develop new techniques and technology that improve pollen and seed production and reduce costs.
- Analyze environmental, pollen, and seed data collected from production locations to discover the primary biotic and abiotic drivers of quality.
- Collaborate with the global research team on farm related projects.
- Conduct research in growth chamber and greenhouse environments.
- Manage all growth chambers and greenhouse projects.
- Collect data relating to the environment and the crop.
- Perform routine germination and pollen testing.
Requirements
- M.S in horticulture or closely related field preferred, or B.S. in horticulture with 2 years of research experience.
- Possesses a firm understanding of growing principles, plant physiology, and environmental impacts on plant production.
- Knowledge of statistics and statistical programming languages including R.
- Ability to independently design, implement, and manage research trials.
- Ability to write and present clear research reports.
- Occasional travel to production locations.

- Collaborates Works cooperatively with others across the organization to achieve shared objectives
Physical Requirements :
- Ability to Lift / Carry 50 lbs. for 5% of the day
- Ability to sit / stand for 100% of the day
- Ability to kneel / bend for 5% of the day
- Ability to use hands / fingers for 100% of the day
- Ability to work in greenhouse and growth chamber environments for 50% of the day.
