Lateral applicants - starting wage based on years of experience and certifications obtained. Year for year credit for experience at other comparable Municipal or District Fire Departments will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Testing Timeline -

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of working level firefighting duties related to protecting life and property of Layton City residents and the general public.

May be required to drive and operate all fire department apparatus. Performs advanced or basic life support to patients according to protocols and level of certification.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Promotes and follows the City's mission statement, values and expectations.

Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned.

Responds to fire alarms and extinguishes fire.

Responds to emergency medical incidents; treats and renders appropriate care for our patients according to protocol; makes appropriate transport decisions and safely transports all patients.

Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.

Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire.

Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects.

Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, performs routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keeps records of such action.

Keeps fire station, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition.

Participates in training activities and instruction sessions.

Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items.

Performs various public information or education tasks;

Enters inspections, training, and fire and emergency medical service calls into the records management systems.

Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention and reporting.

Responds to emergency calls for specialized service such as hazardous materials, confined space rescue, extrication and technical rescues that include high angle, below grade, trench and collapse rescues.

Deals with social service related areas of emergency response by assisting victims and relatives of victims of traumatic events.

Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.

Participates in the Fire Department Physical Fitness program and completes the Department required physical fitness requirements.

Subject to emergency callback and / or mandatory return to duty.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school, or equivalent.

Firefighter I

Must possess a valid Driver's License. Be able to obtain a State of Utah driver's license within 30 days of hire.

Certified as a State of Utah EMT-Basic, EMT-Advanced or Paramedic. Nationally Registered EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic, eligible for reciprocity in the State of Utah, is also accepted.

Successfully complete the Layton City Fire Department required recruit training academy and pass the State of Utah Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification tests within 12 months of hire.

Certified as a NWCG Firefighter II or Utah State Wildland Firefighter I within 12 months of being hired.

Certified as a State of Utah EMT-Advanced or Paramedic within 12 months of being hired is REQUIRED.

Firefighter II

Meet all requirements of Firefighter I

One (1) year as a Layton City Firefighter or 1-2 years as a lateral hire with experience at a comparable municipal fire department or fire district.

Firefighter III

Meet all requirements of Firefighter II

Minimum of two (2) years as a Layton City Firefighter II or at least three (3) years as a lateral hire with experience at a comparable municipal fire department or fire district.
