Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.
The Education department is seeking a full-time Science Teacher Education Specialist. The Specialist supports Master of Arts in Teaching Earth Science Residency Program (MAT ESRP) residents and graduates in their capacity for effective science teaching, including culturally-relevant approaches, in both school residency placements and first / second years of teaching.
This position also supports alumni programming, co-teaches the Teacher Identity Development Workshop Series for residents, provides professional learning programs as part of AMNH’s Gottesman Center’s offerings and collaborates on a variety of other initiatives as needed.
Experience with / knowledge of addressing systemic inequities related to educational achievement (particularly race-, class- and gender-based inequities) is essential for consideration for this role.
Job duties include :
- Co-plan and implement programming including managing monthly meetings and school visits for first- and second-year science teachers in collaboration with staff and MAT ESRP graduates.
- Co-teach a series of ten three-hour workshops entitled Becoming a Science Teacher : Identity, Privilege, & Power in the Classroom.
- Mentor and collaborate with school mentors to : Facilitate the clinically-based co-teaching responsibilities of the residents during their residency rotations;
- Support instruction aligned with clinical tools and assignments;Facilitate monthly after-school meetings with mentors and residents at each of two partner schools;
andSupport the implementation of Mentor Academy (the professional learning program for school-based residency mentors).
- Provide professional learning as part of the Gottesman Center’s programs for NYC teachers.
- Disseminate and / or acquire knowledge via participation at conferences.
The expected salary range for the Science Teacher Education Specialist is $88,000 / annual $95,000 / annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities.
The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience. Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in education.
- New York State Science Teacher certification and / or National Board Certification in Science.
- Five years of teaching experience in secondary Earth science.
- One year of experience coaching / mentoring science teachers.
Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
- Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
