This position is within the Emergency and Critical Care unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital that is open 24 / 7 / 365.
Multiple shifts are open which include overnights, weekends, holidays and on-call. All shifts after 6pm and weekends include shift differentials above the regular hourly pay rate.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.

Preferred Qualifications
Proven experience in an emergency healthcare setting that will include critical care for small animals.
Registered Veterinary Technician license within the state of Georgia, or ability to transfer another state license within 6 months.
Position Summary
The registered veterinary technician position is responsible for providing animal nursing care within the Emergency Critical Care unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
This position is skilled in all facets of veterinary animal care regarding patient assessment, emergency triage procedures, surgery preparation and patient case management.
This position involves handling patients in life threatening situations where the following duties involved in triage of accident patients includes : CPR, Collection of blood, urine by expression, cystocentesis or catheterization, Administration and application of anesthesia, drugs, fluids, medications and immunological agents by oral, parenteral and injectable routes and utilization of computer systems to enter and maintain medical record keeping.
The RVT will need to professionally communicate with Veterinarians, students and fellow technicians concerning the affected workflow, time limitations and patient status and will maintain a positive attitude and calm demeanor throughout stressful situations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and / or Competencies
Position needs graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technician program and passing the VTNE with confirmed RVT license in the state of Georgia or ability to obtain an RVT license in the state of Georgia within 6 months of employment.
- Experience properly handling animals.
- Capable of dealing with stressful situations.
- Ability to perform phlebotomy on animals.
- Capable of manually calculating basic formulas for weight conversions, medication dose conversions.
- Knowledge of animal anatomy.
Physical Demands
1. Lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
2. Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions, deal with problems with concrete variables and draw appropriate / accurate conclusions.
3. Sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
4. Dealing with stressful situations.
5. Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects / containers / machinery.
6. Wear all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles etc.
7. Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
8. Work within an environment that has high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids that need disposal, and open wound management.

Duties / Responsibilities
Provide medical care to small animal patients that are receiving emergency services. Read and understand patient records, and having knowledge of medical condition processes.
Will perform multiple procedures, including intravenous and arterial catheterization, Collection of blood, urine by expression, CPR and triage.
Administration and application of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications and immunological agents by oral, parenteral and injectable routes, venipuncture, intubation, calculating drug doses.
Percentage of time 40 Duties / Responsibilities
Use equipment such as pulse oximetery, direct arterial pressures, central venous pressures, IV fluid pumps, syringe pumps, indirect blood pressures and oxygen cages.
Manage of various types of tubes (chest, GI and nasal), troubleshooting various catheters and tubes for problems and solutions, caring for emergent and critical patients.
Induction and maintenance of anesthesia; placement of intra-nasal, intra-gastric tubes; dental procedures; euthanasia; surgical assistance;
resuscitative procedures; applications of splints and slings; application of appropriate wound dressings and external supportive care in severe wound and burn cases.

Attend and provide in-put during patient rounds, complete patient status reports, assist with patient receiving, perform or assist with specimen collection, enter VETVIEW requests and patient charges, communicate surgical cases with anesthesia, obtain lab results.
