Job Summary

GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

Skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment. Duties also include the performance of manual laboring tasks.

Essential Job Functions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

Operation of all equipment associated with an Equipment Operator position plus being able to operate a road grader and other equipment as required by the Road & Bridge Manager or his / her designee.

Adheres to operational procedures within the division.

Keeps supervisor informed of all potential safety or operational problems.

Must respond to supervisor on special request in a timely manner when required.

Performs manual labor tasks such as frequent shoveling, raking and loading materials by hand.

Understand and comply with the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners employee handbook and other established policies and procedures.

Perform other job-related functions as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge of :

Operating characteristics, safety practices and techniques of heavy equipment.

Operational requirements of heavy equipment including recommended procedures for daily inspecting and cleaning of the equipment

Traffic laws and other regulations governing the operation of equipment.

Ability to :

Communicate effectively with supervisors.

Read and comprehend instructions in order to maintain the equipment in compliance with service manuals and operational policies.

Carry out assigned tasks with verbal instructions.

Perform all activities without constant supervision.

Work extended hours and weekend if required.

Work constantly outside under adverse weather conditions of cold, heat, humidity and rain.

Make effective decisions.

Resolve problems effectively.

Skilled in :

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public.

Establishing and maintaining a team environment with fellow employees.

Performance of the assigned duties and functions.

The use and care of equipment, tools, etc. used in the performing the essential functions of the job assigned.

Time management methods effectively.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS :

Constant walking, standing, use of both hands, fingers and legs for extended periods.Very frequent lifting of 30 lbs. or less.

Frequent heavy lifting of 30 lbs. or more. Very frequent lifting of 30 lbs. or less reaching above shoulders, kneeling, bending and squatting.

Good hand / eye coordination.Good vision and hearing with or without correction.

WORK HAZARDS :

Driving in heavy traffic, in all types of weather conditions. Working in public areas under an environment of pedestrian and vehicular traffic while in close proximity of other workers.

Must be able to move from one environmental condition to another frequently. General occupational hazard of being around heavy equipment on a daily basis.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED : Work shoes, work gloves, shield cap, safety vest, safety glasses, hard hats and back support belts.

Vehicular seat belts to be used at all times.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE / RECOVERY ACTIVITIES :

County employees are considered essential personnel in providing and continuing services to our community during and following a disaster, such as a hurricane, or in other emergency situations.

As a requirement of County employment, County employees are subject to being required to remain at work during an event, respond to a recall immediately following an event and / or immediately reporting to work when an all clear is declared by the County Administrator.

During these types of events, County employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION : Graduation from high school or trade school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Required successful completion of training courses in heavy equipment operation and preventive maintenance.

EXPERIENCE : One (1) year experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the type of moderately complex heavy equipment.

NOTE : An equivalent combination of experience / training and / or experience may be substituted to meet the above noted minimum qualifications.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations : Must have a minimum of a valid Florida CDL Class B Driver's License as a condition of employment.

Must maintain a good driving record.

Driving Position - Operating County vehicles and / or equipment is a primary function of this position.

This is a union position

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING : This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 1 background screening.

SICK LEAVE
