The Opportunity :
Boston Childrenâ€s Hospital (BCH) is seeking a Senior Vice President / Chief Nursing Officer (SVP / CNO). Reporting to the current Executive Vice President, Patient Care Operations and System Chief Nursing Executive (EVP PCO / SCNE), Laura J.
Wood, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, this is a distinct opportunity to lead Boston Childrenâ€s senior nursing operations team and patient-care functions within an organization widely recognized for its exceptional and growing nursing and interprofessional practice environment.Â
The SVP / CNO will serve as a key member of the leadership team at BCH, responsible for directing nursing and related patient care programs within the organizationâ€s primary acute care, ambulatory care, and satellite settings.

As a key senior leader guiding nursing operations and care delivery processes, the successful candidate will bring a strong strategic understanding of the discipline of nursing, team-based / interprofessional care models, quality-safety and improvement science, team member well-being and engagement, healthy work environments, staffing and operational effectiveness, nursing / interprofessional education and workforce development, equity-diversity-inclusivity-belonging, optimization of clinical workflows via contemporary IT practices and virtual care strategies, as well as team-based care delivery model innovation.
The Ideal Candidate : Â
• Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) and Master of Science degree in nursing practice / administration (MS / MSN) required.
BSN degree coupled with a masterâ€s in business administration (MBA) or other healthcare related masterâ€s degrees (, MPH or MHA) degree completion acceptable when coupled with doctoral level preparation completion / near term completion commitment.Â
• Completion of doctoral preparation, or commitment to enroll within 24 months of hire via a research-focused degree (PhD or DrPH) or practice-focused degree (DNP) program with timely progression of degree requirements.Â
• Educational preparation and prior experience as an advanced-practice registered nurse (APRN) coupled with broad operational leadership capacity is desirable, though not required.Â
• Nurse Executive Board Certification (NE-BC / NEA-BC) via ANCC or equivalent bodies , AONL reflecting executive leadership skills and capabilities is required, or commitment to complete within 36 months of hire.Â
• Professional licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts prior to date of hire.Â
• Substantial, progressive system-level nursing operations leadership experience is required, preferably including several prior years†experience leading in either a Chief Nursing Officer or Associate Chief Nursing Officer capacity within a leading academic hospital / health care system known for nursing excellence.Â
• Prior senior nursing leadership experience within a highly matrixed, academic health system with an affiliated physician organization, medical school, and research environment is strongly preferred.
Those with experience in a complex, integrated delivery system may also be considered.Â
• Prior experience leading in an ANCC Magnet designated organization required.Â
• Pediatric-specific nursing leadership experience is considered a strong plus, but not required.Â
• Demonstrated business, regulatory, and communication acumen.Â
• Proven ability to influence change and to create alignment with other team members and departmental leaders outside of her / his span of control , support services, finance, facilities, IT and others in a manner that advances shared goals and effective relationships.Â
• Prior success guiding nursing and improvement science to advance care quality and safety via evidence-based practice, clinical inquiry and research.Â
• Demonstrated policy advocacy experience in alignment with Government Relations and organizational priorities.Â
• Cultivate continuous learning within a professional practice environment to advance nursing and interprofessional education, team member well-being, and professional growth as antecedents to retention of a highly engaged workforce.Â
• Experience leading in a matrixed academic health system, demonstrating prior success to balance inpatient, ambulatory and satellite system priorities.Â
• Demonstrated ability to meld a results orientation with authentic leadership skills including genuineness, humility, empathy, and ethical practices.Â
• Significant experience contributing to nursing recruitment / talent acquisition and retention strategies in alignment with evolving human resource and nursing leadership models.Â
• Demonstrated ability to grow and develop a diverse workforce within the organization and community with associated measurable outcomes.Â
• Prior successful experience building academic-practice partnerships with schools of nursing regionally and nationally.Â
• Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to adapt written and in person communication to a wide range of audiences.Â
• Demonstrated ability to advance new models of care and to accelerate IT-enabled practice and workflow changes.Â
