Assistant Track and Field Coach

Position Summary :

The Assistant Track and Field Coach will assist the Head Coach in the daily coaching, administrative, and recruiting demands of the track and field programs.

The Assistant Track and Field Coach will primarily be working with the sprinters, hurdles, and multi-events for the men’s and women’s programs.

The Assistant Coach works under the supervision of the Head Coach and Athletic Director.

The Assistant Coach is a member of the Athletics Department and serves with athletic staff covering a variety of sports and services.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • At least two year of prior collegiate or high school coaching experience is required.
  • A suitable combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.

Preferred Qualifications :

Prior coaching and administrative experience with a successful intercollegiate track program is preferred. Three years of collegiate coaching experience is preferred.

  • Coaching Responsibilities : Create a training program for sprinters, hurdlers, and multis. Prepare for daily practice sessions and address specific equipment issues as they arise before, during, or after practice, assist in the preparation, planning, conducting, and evaluation of practice sessions, and work with individuals on specific tasks and skills before, during, and after practice, during season and off-season, oversee all strength and conditioning sessions on or off campus, serve as mentor to athletes, helping resolve academic and non-academic issues, and be available to coaches and players before, during and after practices, matches, and events.
  • Academic Support : Monitor academic progress and intervene when necessary, maintain effective and open communication with OCU faculty;

inform them of student-athlete absences due to athletic events.

  • Team Administration : Assist with travel arrangements for the team, assist in overseeing duties of team managers / student employees, follow OCU procedures in handling any monies that flow through the Track and Cross Country Program, and assist Head Coaches in the planning and coordination of events.
  • Recruitment Responsibilities : Assist head coaches in the coordination of recruitment activities including but not limited to the following : prepare and distribute recruiting information to walk-on athletes and high school recruits, identify prospective athletes through dialogue with high school coaches and other sources, coordinate mailing of recruitment materials to prospective student-athletes;

maintain computerized "Master" recruit list, make phone contact with prospective student-athletes when appropriate, assist in scheduling and carrying out campus visits with prospective student-athletes and their parents, and related activities.

  • External Relations and Development Responsibilities : Help with the development of a booster club and parents' support group, assist in community services projects as directed, and assist in the formulation of team and department fundraising activities and promotional events.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Strong commitment to the student-athlete concept
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate technique and skills to the student-athlete
  • Working knowledge of applicable collegiate rules and regulations
  • Recruiting skills preferred
  • Ability to recruit and coach student-athletes
  • Ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the university, applicable conferences, agencies, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff and the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally, telephonically, in person and in writing
  • Ability to represent the university and Athletics department in a friendly, courteous and professional manner
  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment as required

Physical Demands and Working Conditions :

  • Work is primarily outdoors, but requires the incumbent to be in an indoor environment at times
  • Attendance at weekend competitions and practices end events is required
  • Off-campus, state, and regional travel is required
