Assistant Fire Inspector

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Assistant Fire Inspector in the Fire Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to work in the Wildland Urban Interface ( WUI) Division and help administer special projects aimed at assisting residents with defensible space, hazardous vegetation cleanup, and preparing for wildfire.

This position also plays an important role in grant-funded projects, program management, and outreach events as well as fulfilling technical work required.

Equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in fire, building, or code enforcement inspections in a paid professional, internship, or volunteer capacity.

Municipal experience desirable. Other desirable qualifications include : Completion of California State Fire Marshal's Fire Prevention 1A, 1B, and 1C courses;

Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D; or International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I; Associate’s degree in fire science, emergency management, fire protection engineering, environmental science, ecosystem management, public policy, public administration, or related field.

The exam process will include, but may not be limited to :

Application review for minimum qualifications and required documents

Competitive review and assessment of applicants' education, training, and experience

Assessment Center tentatively scheduled for the week of November 4, 2024

Written Exercise (50%)

Oral Board Interview (50%)

Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills;

problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification.

The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate.

Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews slated for November 18-20, 2024.
